Waht'll it do mister (the fastest Series thread!)
« on: March 16, 2008, 22:31:47 »
OK its a bit quiet round here so......

Who has the fastest or Slowest Series.....

Mine managed 62 on the Satnav speedo (the main spedo is a bit bouncy!) , on a flat, possibly slight downhill motorway. No Overdrive on a 2.25 petrol SIII '71 LWB (no rear tub)

Obviously anything over 70 is recorded on the autobahn or a track day.

So whos fasted, and whats the spec.

Indicated 65mph before I began to back off back down to cruise speeds (50mph), with an over-reading speedo (SWB speedo with LWB rims and larger tyres), so taking into account what the difference is it would of been around 70-75mph.  This was on the flat with little head wind, and also after I had just given it a good service and wanted to see what it would pull up to with the new carb as well.

I also have an overdrive.

A good bit over 70MPH in the above Speedo wouldn't go above 60MPH and didn't have GPS 3.5V8(SD1) through rev where about 5800rpm in fourth though.

About 80ish on the speedo (well, looked like about 5mph off the scale). 2.25 Diesel, overdrive 205R16 tyres.  It'll do 70 on the flat but this was down a steep hill, sounded like it had reached the goviner so there was nothing left in it - calculations I've done on the tyre size and gear ratios back that up too, as did the looks on the faces of all the cars I was overtakeing at the time - who says diesels are slow?

70mph on the level by gps in a laden 2.25D 109" without an overdrive.
It did have more to give, but I wasn't keen on risking it throwing a rod...

93mph (indicated) in a 2.6 6cly 109", on 3.5 diffs. Used a slight decent to gain speed, it then held it on the flat. Never again, it was very scary.
80mph GPS ^^ same vehicle. On a private track which is rather similar to climbing windy hill on the M62... ;)

Oh, and the slowest - the 2.25D 109" above, with the timing a tooth out. 35mph on the flat, with half a mile runup...

Slowest in regular use was 2.25D 88", that topped out at about 61 on the flat, (on 7.50s), and that wasn't the govener, as it sped up going downhill.
Coming up to the end of the M67 into a bad headwind on one occasion I was down to 45mph...

'bout 2mph at the moment, once the engine's in, she'll go for a good run and we'll see, still got 3.54 diffs in, so given a downhill section I'm hoping I'll be able to stop (sticky brakes).

On a few occasions running to make the last ferry home from work in France the gps has reported a scary 95mph with an inch or so of travel left on the loud pedal, but that is with a v8, overdrive, 3.9 diffs and 235/85 mud terrains.

I tried timing 0-60 in the 101 on the Slapton Line one day (flat, straight and 2.3 miles long).  4 minutes later we were still not over 55 on the gps and were coming into Torcross village (speed limit and bend) so I had to throw out the anchors.

Driving North through Mauritania and Western Sahara we had a headwind for about 3 days which kept us below 40 and took the economy down to about 6mpg!
