Axle swap
V8MoneyPit:
Hi all
I have a rebuilt 10 spline diff that was going into my 1988 drum braked rear axle. Unfortunately, I've found the axle has previously been badly repaired and I'd like to find another casing. The question is, can I use a disc braked axle with my 10 spline diff? Can the 10 spline half shafts be used in a disc brake axle?
TIA.
TDi90:
yes im pretty sure they can...
but wait for someone else to second me
Disco-Ron:
Yes...... there are LOADS of 10 splined axles with discs........ although, there are also two types of disc axles cases, early imperial ones, and later metric ones, the metric ones have a different oil seal arrangement, and therefore require different shafts!
Range Rover Blues:
The metric type you refer to were introduced around the time that ABS came along. The early or imperial axles have thicker muchrooms on the end (RRC/Disco) and smaller bolts, IIRC the defender had seperate driove members and wouldn't take alloy wheels, the end of the halfshaft sticks through too far but they also don't sit flat on the flange.
ABS axles will have much thinner 'mushrooms' or in the case of Defender will have norrower drive members and as said the oil seal is moved inside the stub axle, which is also different.
that said, all 10 spline diffs are interchangeable, even the very early imperial diffs (pre EFi, a metric diff might be found in an imperial axle) except for the oil filler.
But your best bet is to find a good RRC/Disco axle and fit that, with or without your rebuilt diff.

Problem is that the rebuilt diff has an ARB fitted too.... not sure I want to throw out £650 worth of diff! But, to be serious, I am not too fussed about a disc axle. I would happy with a drum one, but I thought I'd ask to see if I could widen my options.
So, to sum up. I can use a non ABS axle with my 10 spline diff and half shafts? Are you saying there disc axles with a 10 spline diff?
The existing axle casing has had a radius arm bracket replaced.... very badly. I've not seen welding quite like it before  My other option is to cut the bracket off and put one on better. I just thought it might be a good excuse to get discs on the back!
Thanks for the help.
