Oops! Broken again ..

There I was minding my own business, off down the pub (for non-alcoholic drinks obviously) when without warning the rev counter dropped to zero, the charge warning light came on and power steering went off  :'(

Aha! The fan belt has been a bit noisy lately so I guess it's either broken or just fallen off one of the pulleys. Pull into the side of the road for a quick look and sure enough the belt is gone  :(. Was just about to walk back down the road to see if I can find it when I notice there's something else missing too ~ the pulley that drives the water pump isn't there (or the bit it bolts on to)

NUTS!! Walk back down the road but can't find said errant parts so resolve to wait for the AA and their big truck with the flashing lights (aka flat-bed taxi). Also resolve to wait in pub which is only 50m up the road  :) Got to give them credit, they were there in less than 40 mins from the time I called them and there was no pratting about ~ just load it on the wagon and take me home  :)

Now all I've got to do is source the bits in the morning or it's no laning for me at the weekend

Did you have the water pump off recently and not fitted properly

No, as far as I can tell it's never been off before ... and fancy suggesting I wouldn't fit it properly  :-$  :D

 check for damage around the area... a stray belt can literally "whip" up some damage when it lets go....

good luck

SteveGoodz:
Managed to get a good look under the bonnet this morning, in the daylight. Can't see any obvious damage done by the departing belt, but that may have been helped by the fact that there's no viscous fan or cowl fitted so less for it to hit.

One good bit of news though ~ the pulley was still in the engine bay  It was resting on the bottom hose and doesn't appear to have done any damage in getting there. One less bit to buy.

Have ordered a new pump and gasket plus serpentine belt which should arrive tomorrow (latest Friday). Hope so or there'll be no laning for me on Sunday  :'(
