2inch spring fitted but dont look right
« on: February 28, 2008, 02:10:53 »
i bought some +2 spring from foundry 4x4 but after fitting to the truck it looks 1-2 inches higher on the back the spring were different sizes and the receipt says that the smaller ones are for the front and the longer for the back does this sound right or should the longer ones be fitted to the front?

i will try and get some pics if i dont forget to take my camera again

cheers

no
the fronts are usualy around 1/2 inch shorter than the rears
also
for a disco
you have two types of front springs
ones for a disco without a winch
and ones for a winch equipt disco ( basically 90 front springs  ;))

When I fitted my new springs the fronts were made from thicker gauge coils, were yours thicker on the front ones?

hi when i put mine on it was higher at the front with the longer ones on the back ( sounds odd i no) so swapped them around now all fine. so all down to thickness not length.

cheers for your replies the thickness of the springs were the same to look at however i didnt measure them also they are for standard bumper not winch bumper

the receipt ive got says
445mm high heavy duty spring disco and
394mm high heavy duty spring front rr/

but the rear is nearly two inches higher than the front but a couple of people have suggested that when i put the rear seats back in it will sit normal but im not convinced the seats are heavy enough to make a difference

IM SURE ITS Normally shorter stiffer springs on the FRONT, and longer softer springs on the REAR, not 100% but nearly. and seats has jack all to do with it.

There are 3 equally important measurements that determenting the compressed height (ride height). They are free length, the rate (how stiff it is) and the load on the spring.

A short but stiff spring can give the same or evan a higher ride hight than a long soft spring for the same load.

Give the lengths you mention, my guess is that they are blue, made?/distrobuted by Bearmach and are BA2102 and BA2104
http://www.bearmach.com/acatalog/Disco%20Pages.pdf
See page 12 for their full specification

One question, are the coils equally spaced on you lift springs? If so then the rate should be constant, if they are not and some coils are closer together than others then the springs are most likely variable rate, which makes it more difficult to make accurate predictions of ride height.

If you can, with the springs still on your discovery measure the compressed length of all 4 springs, from this it should be possible to work out the sprung weigth on each spring and determine what rate and length of spring is needed give the desired ride height.

I should think you have them on the right way round*, its just the rear springss you have selected are too long and stiff compare to the front springs to give a balanced ride height. Easiest solution is to do like a friend and just put a large oil cooled welder in the back, which will weight it down nicely.

 i must bow down to your superior knowledge of springs not only did you get the colour right you got the make and part numbers right aswell you are the spring king [-o<

well as you got all the above right im guessing you now know the coils are equally spaced i will have a measure up tomorrow i will measure compressed springs and hight from floor to arch and post a couple of pics up so you can all see what im on about cheers or the info

well i have three kids and another on the way so if i then have another to fill the last spare seat the truck should sit fine lmao

i had a quick measure up against a standard one and from the centre of the hub to the line on the body its 45mm higher on the front and 115mm higher on the back and thats with all the interior back in but without spare fitted.
so i took the rollbar off to see if that was stoping it settling as it was at a funny angle but it made no difference to ride hight so theres must be something wrong somewhere

you are the spring king [-o<

Just because I occasionally sit on a throne it doesn't make me royalty.

The measurement I was meaning was the length of the spring its self when compressed, measured from the top to bottom spring seats.
