Can't open the tailgate
« on: February 24, 2008, 16:31:02 »
As per the subject - friend of mine can't open the tailgate on a Freebie1. The tailgate window doesn't move either, so I guess thats the problem - seeing as the glass normally drops about 1" as the door opens.

I spent the morning working out how to remove the dog guard (having removed two kiddy seats from the back seats first ), and then wrestled with the seat release catchs, finally got all the junk out of the boot and managed to remove the tailgate trim from the inside - hoping to find some sort of manual way of popping the tailgate open...........but nothing, what a bizarre design !!

When you try and drop the tailgate window using the switch on the dash, you can hear a clunk from within the door - which I assume is the motor attempting to lower the glass, but the glass doesn't move, so I reckon the motor is fubar'd.

Any other thoughts or suggestions ?

More likely the cable has broken.
Either a complete drive mechanism from LR or you can replace with a good bike brake cable and some motorcycle nipples.

But you've still got to get the glass down first!

I wondered about a broken cable - but you can only hear the motor 'clonk', if the cable was bust I'd expect to hear it 'whizzing', and something flapping around in the door  :-.

What price are we looking at for the complete mech - is it cheaper to look for a door out of a breaker ?

Mick,

How did you get the glass down ?

I've taken the door trim off (from the inside), but didn't venture much further into the door, so the plastic weatherproofing thing is still virtually in place - there didn't seem to be much space to get at the glass fixings  :?
