« on: February 07, 2008, 08:57:56 »
Ive been reading about Dyna Beads for balancing tyres.
Could you not use the BB pellets used in softguns... these are a lot cheaper??

I don't understand how having a load of beads loose inside the tyre works anyway :-.

Take a look at http://www.scorpion-racing.co.uk and they explain how they work.

That assumes that the tyre stays completely round, but with a bounce you'll get the tyre deforming in the direction of the heavy spot and they would collect in the deformity surely ? Plus you get a deformity at the bottom of the tyre where it contacts the road as well.

Has anyone ACTUALLY used something like this, personally like?

I know in the US they do a "Balancing Ring" that sits on the hub inside the wheel for this sort of thing too, so I assume it works, but I would also worry about the wear on the inside of the tyre (like polishing stones) with this method.

And no, I don't think gun pellets would work, they are too soft, a lot is made of the ceramic qualities that they don't wear much and keep their shape, gun pellets would rub and create a lot of heat and possibly melt together inside the tyre I think.

Linky please.. :)

Never seen them, so I have no idea... but if they are ceramic, then they may well work, I assume they have to be round too as they would jam the barrel if not!

Im not an expert but, due to the gyroscopic effect of the tyres and cornering forces i would have thought these would be dangerous, because of the unsprung weight involved in turning a wheel....... might be just be but i still want lead weights

(edit: opps wrong forum)

I run with 8 oz of 0.2g airsoft pellets in each of my 235x85 MT's. Have done for months, the are great, will never go back to external lead weights if I can help it.

Dynabeads the more expensive option than airsoft BB'S but they are quite big in the USA 4x4 scene, and the buzz has yet to come here, bit like bead lockers and such things.

Only time I 'feel' a difference to conventional balancing is when going through a particular double S bend on a country road at cursing speed (50 - 60mph ish), there is a VERY slight shimmer for the briefest of moments where I think "oh a wobble" and then its gone. I think the forces in that bend make the BB's shift slightly as they find the where the need to go. With that in mind I presume there are other road conditions which would cause that so would be wary of using beads/BB's in a fast road car......but in landrover... whoopie they are a great solution. Tyres remain balanced as they wear or loose chunks of rubber off road. No lead weights to tear off. They greatly help counter against that wobble you get when mud sticks to the inside of the rim. You can fit and balance the tyres yourself as and when you want without having to visit and pay the MAN.

Have driven all UK roads types now with 8z of airsoft BB's in each tyre and the ride is smooth and without shimmer throughout the speed range of my truck on greenway anaconda's.

I had to take a tyre off the rim recently and my airsoft BB's still report in A-OK. Other than turning dark grey/black (from the tyre wall rubber) they have yet to show any sign of deterioration in size or shape. No melting.

I will report back in a years time.

I think Im going to do the same and add them.
It was just a thought when I saw the advert for them that soft gun pellets would work.
In the advert they show a fluid bottle... whats that for??

Because of their size (dyna beads)  they can be feed into the tyre via the air valve. So they use the bottle to pour them in thru the valve. Otherwise you would have to break the bead on the tyre and pour (or insert a burst bag). Airsoft BB's are too big to be fed into the tyre via the valve so you need to break the bead.  The advantage of dynabeads is that they can be poured inside inner tubes... where as airsoft BB's are pretty much tubeless only.

If you use airsoft pellets get the heaviest  you can get. I used 0.2g weighted and bought them in 5000BB bags from ebay.

There is a size chart provided by dynabead and it says my 235x85 16 should have 4oz per tyre, I put in 8oz anyway as the extra has no ill effect and help when u pick up mud on the rim. I would use the size chart as a guide and go a bit over.

Have to say though that if you research it, it is popular to use BB's in the USA with their big ol' 4x4 tyres, their is a lot of chatter on their forums. Although the majority is positive there are those who's balancing issues are not sorted by beads or BB's so it a case of sucking and seeing and there are die hard skeptics. I read one self claimed 'expert' putting the BB's filled tyre on a balancing machine to declare 'there proof it doesn't work', but the speed of such machine doesn't spin up fast enough for the BB's to ever work

If you take the BB's route and not happy at end then it's no big loss you can revert.

All I can say is I am very pleased.

Let us know how you get on. There hasn't been much talk (zero!) of this on UK forums at all so I have kept quite about it due to the expected flak from zee experts

Oh have yet to mention, there is no noise from them pinging around inside wheel like you may assume you might get offroad or something. The only time I ever hear them (and that mean I really have to listen for it!) is when coming to a full stop , there is a SWOOSH as the BB's fall to the bottom of the tyres.

I found it nice and gently, tiny squirt, little pop and they was on. No drama, or big fires or huge bangs like you see in some you-tube videos where people use lighter fuel and such things. I am not advocating the method though, it's the lazy easy way :D

Sounds crazy to me, my friend is a tire fitter and a few years ago he went on a training course, and he saw a video which showed what happened to a tire when a balance weight was put inside a tire as it was fitted to the rim. Then the car was sent out on a runway in controlled conditions, as the car picked up speed the weight got red hot and actually blew the tire off the rim! not good. [-X

It's a fair point TBH but I doubt they'd be selling them if they were dangerous, whether they work or not is another matter.

We've heard from one happy customer, anyone else tried them? good or bad :?
