One day I want to do this

Just found a photo someone has done to a disco and it is what I want to do one day.

I think this looks good and would really be a head turner.

I like the look of it and also it is longer so I could sleep in the back if needed.

also a mate has a 6x6 rangie and I love it. I also love disco's so it would combine my 2 loves. :D

If you had not added the text, I was about to shout "photoshop".  The rear windows look all wobbly, the front alpine light looks very iffy and the gutter above the rear (or in this case, the halfway along the thing door!) also looks suspect too.

However, if it is genuine, it's very impressive and I like it, although it would look so much better on alloys!

If it has had an extra back welded on then surely the td5 is the same shell as the 300tdi? could a td5 rear and tdi front not be possible? Buy a accident damaged front end td5?

Yeah its possible, just wondered why it hadn't all been the same model, keep the handles and lights the same. Is it 6 wheel drive or still 4 wheel drive with a dead axle at the back.

No, the TD5 and 300Tdi body shells are not the same.  I think I read somewhere that every panel is different

How you ever tried to do a 6x6 conversion on photo shop? I tried once. It was quiet hard Here is my efforts.


Also I did find on the DOC web site someone else who did a 6x6 conversion. Here is the photo I kept for future reference



Prefer the look of the one in this original post by me or my attempt. I think this one looks too dark being all black and blacked out windows. My opinion though.

How much do you think it would cost for the conversion for someone to do the lot? I would love to do it myself but havent got the confidence in my skills to do it nor can I weld!  :?

If you look between the 2 rear wheels you can see something going to the back axle at a slight axle. Maybe that is another prop shaft?

Might have to buy the book which comes out this year sometime just to see :lol:

Funny, it does look a lot like a Photoshop job.

Can't say I like the effect all that much.  2 missing fuel filler flaps looks absolutely rubbish for a start.  But if he'd replaced the rear windows & alpine lights with a single pane of glass each, it would look very nice.  As it is, it just looks like a half-hearted Photoshop job!

As for the disco. The 2 missing fuel caps is what makes me think it is a photo shop job. but even so I could hide the missing filler caps in paint quiet easily!!!

At 9-11 mpg  8-[ it probably needs two petrol tanks as well as its lpg system  :doh:

Interesting idea - I'd be more inclined towards keeping the back solid and setting it up as a micro-camper though. You could get a decent bed and plenty of storage in there, add one of those army tents designed to fit over the back of a Landy and you'd have a pretty comfy setup for camping.

My question is where does that forward filler go?  If it goes to a tank, then sureley the top of the 3rd axle will hit it?

how much do you reckon it would cost to get a proffesional to do the job for me? This is including buying a front end shunt disco. Would be better if in same colour as mine :lol:

Doesn't have to be a front end shunt Disco - I've seen a few on ebay minus engine and gearbox that would probably be a good starting point. Keep what you need, ebay the rest, it would probably almost pay for itself!

i dont like the first one shown in the post it just looks odd i quite like the idea of a disco with 2 steering axles at the front :shock: just i dont think its quite feasible..although.... :-k

Had the guy who built my 6x6 101 kept it a little longer, he had a steering axle to put on the rear end, so it would have steered from both ends.  He was going to leave it as a passive floating axle, ie it would have been driven (so true 6wd), but would have just followed the rest of the vehicle from a steering perspective, rather like towing a car on an a-frame.

However, I can see a number of problems:
1) When reversing - the caster effect is lost - you'd need a way of locking it, otherwise you'd crab all over the place.  I think he was looking at some sort of hydraulic locking system.

2) The other drawback is when offroading and the middle axle lifts off the ground.  All of a sudden, the back of your vehicle has two degrees of freedom, and you could end up in a situation where the back overtakes the front - not good.

The way to deal with both of these would have been a hydraulic system which would have centred and locked the axle on demand.  However, this would be potentially another thing to maintain and go wrong, and I'm not sure whether there may be some degree of illegality too.

It would have sorted out the tyre scuff though!

MY MATES built a few of these at his garage, usually rangey classics, personally i think they look cac, plus getting the bits costs a fortune for the transmission.
ones i do half like are the 6wd king cab with big pick up back he does for the tree surgeons and that lot.
