« on: January 15, 2008, 18:19:22 »
OK so whats needed to turn a 5 door tdi into a Camel replica? ( always liked the look - but not the price of a genuine one)
also has anyone actually done it?

You can get the stickers on ebay easily enough - mine cost me about £6, have been on for about a year and don't seem to be showing any signs of wear.

Thing is, I think the Camel Discos probably had minor differences in kit from year to year and possibly team to team. You have to decide whether you want a generic replica or one of a specific vehicle. The generic one will be easier as you can just look at photos and decide which bits you like the look of!

The Safety Devices roof rack on the Camels is different to the standard Highlander
Its taller and a lot rarer (like rocking horse poo)
4 Hella spots and a hella work light
sand ladders
sandglow paint
750 x 16 Michelin XCL tyres
Heavy Duty springs
Superwinch upfront, in a specially adapted normal bumper with a bull bar (2 more Hella's) and then bush wires
Ladder on the rear
Safety Devices roll cage with built in dog guard
Mantec snorkel, steering guard, tank guard, breathers
Nato hitch

Have a read of these

Also I think the roofrack bolted through the roof skin directly onto the roll cage to minimise the loading on the rain gutters.  BTW. a camel lookalike is also known as a shamel  :)

I've got a couple of stickers, but I'm not really going for the replica look - it's more a case of remembering Discos doing some of the most extreme off roading ever. One in the eye for those who try to say they're no use off road!

It does, but also becasue there is a real chance of the car being upside down on the roofrack
The normal advice "keep it shiney side up" doesn't work on the Camel

Oh and I'm pretty sure you need to sell the alloys and fit steels, maybe Wolf but probably Defender with 750 Michelins as mentioned above.

IIRC are the rear speings double coils too, or is that just the Defender.

have read the write up on that one.
Is it really?
They've done a super job
Not many will go to the lengths of fitting the correct cage with the correct roof rack and correct mountings for the rack (through the roof, directly onto the cage)
The front bumper is spot on too
The only thing that looks wrong is the size of the door sticker (all the others are in the correct places and correctlt sized)
Silly really, the Camel Trophy Owners club sell all the stickers, they arn't that hard to get that you should use the wrong size
Hats off though, i wouldn't have guessed it was a fake

Ther reason i posted the Pangaea-expedition link was it shows you how to make a fake Camel

Looks alright but you can see the legs of the roof rack on the gutters, a big give away to imposters
