In need of some expert guidance
« on: January 13, 2008, 17:26:27 »
Basically my landy was a runner up untilla couple of monthy ago, tyhe big end went so i bough a new engine off ebay, and fitte dit but i cant get it to run, and i the cluch is beign a little iffy, im pretty sure it has compression but it desnt seem to want to fire, its a 2.25 perkins diesle in a 79 series 3,

- the problem with the clutch is that it will not fully engage or dissenguge i have tried beeling it to no luck i was just wandering if there was much else i needed to check before i remove th box again to have a look.

- as to the engine, ive just wacked the starter and lift pump off my old one and im pretty sure its all getting fuel, could it be a timing issue,

Any thougth or help would be greatly appriciated

Are you sure its a Perkins -and not just a Land rover 2.25?
Have you tried to make sure the Glow plugs are working, and have you bled the fuel system as even a small ammount of air will cause problems

and now the stupid question - You did make sure it was a runner BEFORE you brought it????

Now got the clutch all sorted, basically came down to me being a retard lol i had set the plate and alligned it and in my haste fogtoen to tighten thepressure plate down afterwards  so the clutch didnt have the pressure to stay engaged think the r$lease bearing was a little sticky too so thats all in and going,

i think the other lift pump was abit knackared too as i managed to get the engine to fire by filling it with gas so its deffinately got compression and timed, think ill try to do the lift pump asap, how do i make sure it is bled properly, is itnot just a case of using the lift handle as that could be my issue, my lift pump seems to only lift for the firts to goes then feel like its pulling air so no fuel is getitng up to the injectors now which is kind of a step back lol,
thanks

you need to loosen the bleed screw on the fuel distribution pump and crank till fuel spurts out, then keep cranking with all the injector bleeds cracked until fuel squirts from each one, tighten down as the fuel squirts out and if all the timing is okay it will probably fire during this process squirting diesel even further and making you rush to tighten it all back up :)

The lift pump alone will not prime the system, especially if its come to rest on a cam in which case the handle will do naff all anyway.

Cheers Steve

oh awesome thats fantastic basically i had a play but not to any sucess i gotfuel out of the injector pump from both screws but the top one doesnt come out wigth much pressure ill give it another go friday i think as im away from my car for a few days, how pressureised is the system? i think im gonna have to re secure the spill pipe as thats kinda loose.

If it is below the cam is this why it would feel like air is being pulled through?

thanks for your help so far
