For the heritage line, the original Rover 2 Litre Diesel from the early days of the Land Rover being produced could be said as the "best" engine.  Why?  It was what the entire line of Land Rover straight four cylinders were developed from right up to the 300TDi.  Santana developed six cylinder engines from that line too (based on the 2.25 petrol and diesel) that have a reputation for being awesome engines.

If you want reliability, economy and decent performance for today's world then it has to be either the 200 or 300 TDi engines.  That's my take on it.  ;)
