just checked rad it looks ok just abit of mud on it

Remove your thermostat & try again.  If it heats up again it's certainly the radiator that is partially blocked.

Range Rover Blues:
I know it generates a lot more heat but I had exactly the same with my LSE and I would have sworn blind the rad was ok, I'd flushed it and check it and all looked fine.

Well in the end I gave it a go, new viscous unit and rad, it was going to cost the same for a pair of Kenlowes and TBH even Kenlowe advised I didn't fit electric fans, so I bit the bullit.

Job done, runs as sweet as a nut and I regularly tow over 2 tonnes.

Yep, went like that on mine, killed one 300tdi engine (misses driving, didn't notice). Replaced engine and a week later of trouble free driving the the same route on a daily basis the blocked rad tried to kill the new engine. Goes to show the Radiator cooling was hardly used normally but if ever does need it it better not be blocked....

I didn't find the fault myself, the engine supplier figured it out right away after my truck arrived to him on back of a big yellow taxi. Run truck up to temperature and feel the Rad with hand, if it stone cold in middle and warm at the side... then its probably blocked and need replacing.

I nearly cooked an engine as well in that very hot summer 2 years ago. Driving along by itself it was fine, up hills was fine. It wasnt until I was about 150miles from home picking up a twin axle caravan for a mate that going up a long hill it went up and up and up and into the red. luckily I could pull over at the top.

I thought the rad looked ok as well but there was mud in between the fins which I couldn't see that blocked it up and knocked some fins out too when off roading. New rad time I think for you. Not very expensive either. How does the antifreeze mixture look like? sifon some out into a beeker and put in the freezer. If it freezes add some more to the system. It also helps to cool the system, I have been told.
