Ok I know I have asked a similar question before but.

I need to think about painting a bulkhead I have for my S3.  Its off the car and will probly be stripped to bare metal.  Its in good condition with only a few areas of surface rust and 1 footwell to weld up (with my Christmas prezzy! a Ceobra mig welder!!!!) but its the wring colour and the original paint seems very thin (like it been in the sun a lot)


The top coat colour will be lada adriatic blue in a halfords tin, which is almost identical to whatever colour it is now (want to keep as its ok everywhere else)

So if I go bare metal do I need an "acid etch primer" first all over then a "normal primer" than colour coat.

Is it worth doing anythign special to the rust prone areas where it bolts on?

I think I hear tell of drilling and waxoiling in the "hollow bits", but mainly I want to get the paint good in terms of primers etc.

if you want to go paint it properly take it back to bare metal or you will get reaction between the acid etch and the lead paint used in the original paint, then acid etch, primer then top coat but make sure you get the correct primers for the paint or they will bubble and react with each other

Did mine on the motor, took it back as best i could with a flapping wheel on my drill and some 80 grit paper...... etched it, 3 coats of gray primer and 3 top coats, after i treated the rusty areas with some 'Crust'!

If it's off the car and bare metal, how about getting it galvanised?
Who needs brakes???

I think that galvanising is too much as the car wont be a perfect specemin.  Mind you ill be able to sell the bulkhead in 10 years when the rest has dissolved!!!!
