Vibration at 60mph

(1/5) > >>

Bob696:
The stats to start

late 200Tdi 90 (discs all round), 2" lift, grip edge tyres (like trac edge AT but softer.

Now the problem
At 60mph I am getting a vibration and a low 'drumming' noise. It wasnt there 5-6 weeks ago when we went to north wales and back. I dont do much motorway work so I dont know how long there has been a problem.

It is definatly speed related rather than revs/gears as I have run the car in 5th low without the same fault.
There is no heat in wheels/tyres/hubs
When I first found the fault last weekend I changed the front prop for a wide angle thingy.
Before the trip to wales I changed the front output flange and seal on the tbox.
I have checked ep90 levels front and back diffs and tbox
Tyres seem OK with no missing wieghts on the wheels

Trouble is that its damn cold and dark when I get home from work and I have this weekend to fix it.
This weekend I intend to change the UJs on the rear prop (one was done 8-9 months ago but cant remember when the other was done) but never had this sort of sound when a UJ has gone before so I aint pinning my hopes on it fixing the problem.

Question is what else should I be checking and how?

Oh yeah
May be unrelated, I very occasionaly get a non rythmic 'weep weep' sort of noise at lower speeds. Always whilst straight and level and just cruising on the power.

L90OOK:
I'd put money on it being the remould tyres causing the vibration...have you got someone to swop wheels with to eliminate?

Bob696:
do remolds 'suddenly' go like that ? Not been happy with them for a while as they are wearing quickly.

I have a 110 as well so could swop the wheels over on that. Rather horrible wheels though :-(

Karen696:
It ain't HIS 110!! and if he says my wheels are 'orrible I won't lend them too him!  Cheeky monkey, least my car isn't making strange noises....

And he nicked my original BFG Trackedge as a spare for his car  (ingratitude, thats what I call it).

muddysteve:
thats a prop uj without doubt

had exactly the same on mine vibration starts around 55mph and then seems to go away/get drowned out after about 75

the weep weep sort of squeaky noise is where on of the bearing cups has run dry and is partialy seized. you might not notice it on the car i didnt but once the prop was removed it was all to evident where the problem lay.

good luck with it (i'd check the front prop t-case end 1st)
