the nice thing about Portugal is you are still in or near civilisation and if the worst happens you will be able to summon whatever help you need. I like rooftents but they do raise your centre of gravity as do roof racks.

i wouldnt necessarily have 2 spare tyres, one and some tyre gunk, as you will be able to buy a replacement in Portugal if you shred one.

Top of my list would be first aid kit, fire extinguishers and emergency charger for your mobile.

Fridges are a good investment the Sibar ones are good and run on 12v, 240 and gas....get propane not butane though as they get much colder. You can get them from go camping(used to be CCC) for £130....they are 200 in the LR mags!

And Join the AA with international recovery.

safari roof rack
Be carefull not to overload it....

i will be fitting spot lights on the roof rack
do you really need them?

waffle boards
good idea, if you are hitting mud/rocks/sand

2 spare tyres
Would only take 1 on a rim, there is a tyre fitting place in every town

tent or one of those pop up roof tents
Roof tent is good, but at £500 upwards is not cheap...

water cannisters
Good idea

3 20 litre jerry cans
are you really going to be that far from civilisation in portugal, I took a jerry can to morocco last summer, and only used it once...

power inverter
Good idea, saves buying 12V chargers for everything

full tool kit
Good idea, but you'll be surprised how few tools you can get away with, don't take multiple sets of spanners etc...

tow rope
yep, and a few good quality, rated shackles

ill have a winch in the new year
Do you really need a winch? its £500 and probably 60KG on your front bumper... i'd rather spend it on a turfor, and a fridge...

ill pick up a turfer winch and a land anchor
Turfer is a good idea, you can usually improvise a ground anchor for emergency use, unless you are going to be regularly getting stuck...

what else would anyone suggest i know im missing loads

first aid kit
decent mapping and navigation
fire extinguishers x2
folding camping chairs
decent portable 12v compressor
basic spare parts kit (wheel bearing, prop UJ etc)
top up fluids (engine oil, gear oil, ATF)
couple of good torches
spade
1996 300Tdi 3-Door Discovery...

H/D Steering rods, Steering guards, diff guards, discoparts H/D rear bumper, rocksliders with tree bars, 245/75r16 General Grabber AT2's..

phrase book

go to http://www.freetranslation.com and translate some common phrases

ie. my landrover has broken where is the closest dealership

my bottom is not working proper wheres the chemist

on the continent it is a requirement to carry a spare set of bulbs and a warning triangle ,and also to put deflectors on you head lamps.

it's also a good idea to have copies of all your documents and keep the real ones in a locked box bolted in the boot and black out your rear windows to hide your kit from thieves.

some countries are a bit funny about CB radios as well so keep'em out of site at boarder crossings.

going through france there are service stations every few miles and in portugal they are almost as common as it is a main route to spain so 3 jerries may be a bit overkill .

Only problem we had in Portugal was gipsy's hanging around service stations trying there luck with gear on tourists roof racks...
so many hills , so little time ....
discovery TD5
work in progress...lol

I would also say that if you wear glasses you should have a spare pair made to your current prescription - in some EU member states this is a legal requirement, in any case it's a good idea.
