hello,
went off roading last weekend and got stuck in some very deep mud, the hand brake stuck on yesterday when i was in a traffic jam, not fun for the cars behind, and today it wont even move of of the drive. it is stuck on better than it worked before hand  :lol:

i spent two hours changing alternater and trying to take hand brake apart, got dark and wet and cold so i gave up. i cant get the drum off all screws are out, can anyone suggest any ways of getting the drum off?

its a E reg 90 with a later fitted 200tdi in.

Land Rover tool #1 - lump hammer!!

When mine started to sieve, I just whacked it a few times with a hammer to free off some of the crud, then was able to take it all apart.
Then I fitted an X-Brake and no more problems!!

can you back off the adjuster nut to release the drum?

You'll probably have to back off the adjuster nut & try forcing the expander rod back in. This should free off the shoes enough to remove the drum.
You will then have to remove & strip down the expander unit & adjuster unit. Give them a good clean out with degreaser to remove all of the accumulated mud & old grease etc & re-assemble them with plenty of copper grease. Then re-fit.
Alternatively, buy an X-Brake....I did. :)

sounds like its time for an X-brake :lol:  when the money comes, means finding a job :oops:

i will try to release adjuster somtime this weekend, but for now its a good method of security a seized hand brake  :lol:

X-Eng are the way forward, the only way one of them is gona seize up is if you leave the hand brake on, rev the engine and dump the clutc....

I speak from experience here
that line down the middle of the calliper should be inline with the disc..



then driving ooh, about 250 miles with the disc rubbing on the calliper will machine quite a good surface into the calliper..




oh, and the brake pads will disintegrate too..



Still, only gonna cost £75 to repair..

disc brakes will seize if the handbrake is left on whilst the vehicle is stood for a while. gentle rocking and a hammer sorts it out though.

i just cant help thinking with the disc brake conversion that i would bent or break the diff off road. my handbrake drum takes some right stick on rocks etc.

Slacken the adjuster off & give the outside of the drum a good tap with hammer.

I have never had a problem with the drum brake & couldn't justify the £200+ for the X-Eng handbrake conversion...although I think there products are excellent.
With my handbrake drum brake I give everything a good coating of copper grease (except the brake surfaces) & it works a treat.  It never sticks or only partially works.  8)

I do thinks Land Rover should put the Disc Brake Handbrake on as standard though :!:  :roll:
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

mine done the same thing after my last play day, loosen the adjuster and whack the drum with a hammer and it will free up.

am thinking of getting the x-brake, just seems a bit pricey..

i never got round to sorting the handbrake out today, and now it could be a while beofre i can as i slit half way through my finger on a cooking oil barrel, be carefull with  them if i had pulled harde i would have lost the top of my finger and i was only taking out the plastic nossle :shock:

ill stick a condom over the finger and gaffa tape it on and then have a go at fixing hand brake tomorrow  :lol: i can hold a hammer all i need :lol:

You obviously arent trying hard enough if the bgest thing you have bought for the money is a £200 improved handbrake. after all, the standard one in good order will hold my 90 on a hill with a 2t trailer on with ease.

I suspect that most x-brake customers are 'piece of mind' type people who dont trust the standard setup and i can understand that. but for 200 quid ill stick to just leaving it in gear thanks.

the best £200 ive ever spent on my truck? mud terrain tyres, without a doubt. over road tyres they are infinitly better off road.

cheers. my mate once had his 110 roll down a hill. he blamed it on dirt in the handbrake drum loosening but i think he made it up. just forgot to put the handbrake on.

AFAIK it says in the landrover handbook that you should leave it in gear. which is a perfect failsafe.

even with an X-brake if anything breaks in your rear drivetrain then your landy effectively has no hand brake without the difflock. i think if you have it in gear with the hand brake on then it will still be ok. but im not sure.

anyway, always leave it in gear. however much your handbrake cost  :wink:

The standard hand brake is far better than a disk brake, they will hold alot lot more, id trust holding a trailer on a steep bank, in fact i do, its part of my job. I think for once landrover actually considered what they were doing when they decided to stick with the transmission hand brake. Had no problems with mine, cant fault it

another thing with a disk is its a bit more exposed to oil/grease and could fail when you least expect it. the drum can get oil in it if the transfer box leaks im guessing but it is more likely to be a progressive problem. giving you time to notice before it gets too bad.

no deed for a handbrake i drove around for weeks when mine siezed just backed it off until i cleaned and rebuilt it.
