The scales have been lifted from my eyes

I had the idea that repairers these days are told where to buy parts, the insurer gets any discounts passed on to them, the insurer sets the hourly rate and there are book rates for almost all jobs.
There are exceptions to this but I think repairers here will agree that this is the system that the insurers try and impose. How the hell any repair shop makes money I don't know.
Get a quote for a private paint job - then see if you can find out what a main dealer will pay a paint shop for the same job. I am assured in the trade it's peanuts but for Joe public it's a big bill.
I am pretty sure that no-one is making big bucks doing insurance work.

You're right there, one of my mates has a body shop, and all the insurance work is to set hours etc. they are TOLD how long they get to do the job!
And on top of that the insurance companies are trying to squeeze the little man out by telling the insured that they HAVE to take the car to one of their "approved" repairers.
Incidentally you don't!!! YOU decide where your car goes, and if the insurer says "you won't have a guarantee or a cutisy car" they are talking crap, the repairer will provide both!
