Full metal challenge !!
« on: November 28, 2007, 16:02:32 »
I've just booked my rangie in for a mot 3 months early because i've got some jobs to do on her, (see other posts ) and I dont want to spend too much on her if in feb it's going straight to the breakers    My idea is this..............
If she is a bit of a lost cause then strip all body work and build some sort of offroading mutant !!      I'm thinking scaffy bars and box section should do, maybe flatbed on back for motocross bikes, grenade launchers, you know the sort of thing     Eventually making it road legal. Removable lights etc. What you think ????? The more I think about it the bigger my smile is getting      Anyone done a kit car and how hard was it to get road registered ??

If you build, say a Dakar onto that chassi then you keep the current V5, as you retian the engine/transmission/axles/steering/suspension and chassis.  The body counts for nowt in the scheme of things.

IBEX?
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

I've decided to go for the convertable option !!      I've drawn a few rough plans today and poked about in the beastie. I cant really see any problems  8)  I'm going for the canvas roof type thing similar to the military 90/110 setup. basically canvas lashed on with rope. I'm fitting a removable roll bar,( on when offroading and off when pottling about posing  8) ) Wife thinks I'm mad and in the middle of a mid life crisis. I think that she is probably right and it sound's like a damn good exscuse to me, especially as i can drag it out for a few years yet      I've got a collegue in work who can make the canvas top and 2 scaffy bars in the garage waiting to be chopped up for a roll bar !!!!! I'll do pics as an when we get progress! I'm VERY excited !! Just gotta sort the head gasket first     Oh I'll be leaving the doors on but everything else from the windscreen back is coming off !!!

so, would it be an almost trayback?

i must admit it does sound very interesting and the temptation to get the grinder out is really appealing, must fight the temptation!

Good luck and keep us posted with pics and stories!

Convertible...... Yeah Do It :)

Heres my first one :)

Original one off roof....

originally kept the door tops but got rid soon after...

I eventually got a 90 canvas as this was the perfect size although the front needed work to fit in with the curved screen, loads more fun than having a roof..... :)

Cheers Steve

Nice one Steve  8) Any prob's with the doors flapping about in the wind before you took the tops off mate ???? Oh and the rear panel's ? I'm just thinking that cos they are only aluminium will I need to strengthen them to stop them flapping about ? I dont want to lower the rear tailgate and my rear wings open up like a terry's choclate orange

Quick update while I'm here. Flew through the mot    Head gasket's being done as we speak    THEN IT'S COMMENCE OPERATION 5 DOOR LWB SOFT TOP !!!!

Door tops are built very solid so no movement at all, I removed em cos i wanted a more open open top, the rear panels are bolted to the inner steel arches in the same way as if the roof was still there, the lower rear panels dont really gain any lateral strength from the roof as such, almost all the strength is from the inner steel carcass which is more than up to the job.

Cheers Steve
