Volkswagen Transporter
Eeyore:
Check for high oil consumption, and the seats aren't to eveyones liking. A good drive, but not the best in class.
Spares seem well priced and even the five speed box is nice to use. Fuel consumption is repsectable, too. Overall, I've liked the ones I've driven.
Cheers

This is true for most of the VAG diesels - I managed to do a litre of oil over 5,000 miles. When I quizzed the dealer they said anything up to a litre per 1,000 miles was not a major cause for concern.
But yes - the VW diesel engine is excellent, and the various VW van's I've driven (mainly Luton with tail-lift) have been pretty nippy.

my mate has one for work its only on 290k... goes like a trai nfor a van too

Sarah's dad has one for his business and has done so for years. He won't even look at anything else now, because he's been so impressed with them.
Their current one has the row of seats in the back to make it more universal..... and then there's the alloys, the metallic black paint and the tinted glass..... now known as the pimpmobile!

My dad has a T5 Caravelle auton with the 174 diesel in it, its a rocket, I had a go once. Great vehicle for a task but they are solelss unlike the old ones.
He hasn't had much problems with it but I have herd the 5 cylinder ones don't seem to be as reliable as the 1.9 engines. The 100(ish) horse engine will be adiquate unless you want auto to tow things.
If you want to read about people moanng about them go on the Brickyard forum, I'm sure there are still many happy owners out there like my Dad, something you might not belive if you read some of those rants.
The old T4 was exceptionally reliable and so a very hard act to follow, the letest T5 doesn't seem to have pulled that off apart from mental performance. Its probubly a bit too complicated for its own good but thats modern machinery in genral I think (and if its not it soon will be).
Personly they haven't made anything newer than my T3 that'd make me think about swapping, probubly never will eather! Then again mines a toy not an essenchal works van.
