QuickTime is doing my head in

Calling all computer techies (and nerds) ~

I have iTunes installed on my Windows PC (XP Pro fully up-to-date) and this relies on QuickTime to play music files. It was all behaving okay until I installed an update from Apple the other day ~ now QT has taken over  :x

Despite having changed it's setting so that it only plays iTune files it keeps trying to run just about everything including Flash ... and failing! Most annoying is it has stopped me viewing YouTube videos .. I just get a horid blue "Q" where the vid should be  :?

Anyone got a solution aside from uninstalling it?

I know you said you don't want to uninstall it but that's what I would do! I won't instal quick time or real player cos they take over everything so I instal the alternatives   Look here for the alternative and here for Real player alternative  :D

Evilgoat:
Welcome to quicktime. best way to stop this happening sadly is not to use it, tis notorious for doing this and it cant actually play a lot of the stuff it associates with.

Uninstall it then re-install using the custom option and it will allow you to choose the file associations.

Didn't quick-time have serious security issues??? (seem to remember reading about it somewhere online).

My main gripe with it was it took over playing mpeg videos in Internet Explorer. I tried changing settings in QuickTime and WMP, all to no avail. In the end I found it had a couple of plugins activated within IE, so I deactivated those, and now WMP is back doing it's job.
