Embarrassing Mistake

was it sitting on the piston then :?  and you didnt see it??? oops seems strangely insufficient

I can't explain why I didn't see it, I looked hard enough for it.  I thought "I don't want to put it together and risk the clip being on top of the piston, that would be really silly and expensive".
The engine ran really well for a few seconds when I started it, then made some horrible noises and started smoking a lot and ticking over at 500rpm.

No, but I have a spare hose clip - you'll need one of those too  :lol:

Commiserations, but I have to say this is also somewhat amusing  :D
