I'd be crying if I wasn't smiling...the worst bit is that this all started when I discovered the glow plugs were knackered and I sheared one of them off when I tried to unscrew it..so I took the head off to get the broken bit out...and found the rockers with big pits in the pads that act on the valves and the rocker shaft actually broken in to four peices...but it all ran fine, just took a few turns to start on cold mornings...I think I should have put up with that and left it well alone.

Went through all that on an orion, only to 'loose' a bit of spark plug. assumed it fell out outside the engine and had them same experience, lest it died there and then not on the road.

I know of 1 300tdi thats breaking but head gasket and pus head, are suspect :( As Dan said, hows the piston and bore? If they are damaged you'll run the risk of a piston failing/melting or start getting hot spot problems.

Sorry it happened dude :( I know you were lookign forward to fixing her.
