It's because of the great spider/snail wars of 1837 during which time the snails used a cunning blend of varnish and paint to camouflage themselves as conkers before unleashing sluggish death on their spider overlords.

The spiders, who were thwarted in their attempts to enslave the snail race (they wanted the slime to boil up into spider webbing) never forgot how their little toes got all caught up in the gloop and it's left a long lasting series of psychological effects on the poor spiders,  such as being afraid of conkers and attempting to wash their feet whenever they see a bathtub.
