Differences between civvy and mod 90?
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:27:31 »
Hi Guys,

Ive just picked up an ex military 90, its a 1988 model with a soft top and 2.5 nad, and I was just wondering what the differences are between a standard civvy spec land rover and the military spec one...

There are the obvious ones:

Soft top
small "roll bar" (how good this would be if you were to roll Im not convinced?!)
lack of black plastic panels around the headlights
screw on mushroom style lens
slash cut door tops
lack of things like clock/cig lighter ertc inside as well as having the 6 way military lighting switch.

I was wondering what if anything is different with the chassis / axles / bulkhead / engine etc etc mine seems to have an extra fuel filter on the chassis behind the fuel tank as well as the one on the bulkhead (dont remmeber seeing that on a civvy?)

part 2 of the question - with the parts that are different how easy are they to get spares for and where from

Its slow and noisey but I love it :-)

Cheers

Ben

Not an expert but I don't think there is much that is different, some aspects fo the chassis may have been beefed up though.

As long as it's a 12v defender you have then life should be relatively easy.

Only other thin I can think off is associated to the 6-way switch. There is a small bulb above the diff (which may still be painted white), this is the convoy light (Conv. position on switch). It was used to allow the vehicle behind to follow in the dark without using it's own lights.

Make up of convoy would have lights set as follows:

lead veh - Side & Convoy
Mid vehs - Convoy
Rear Veh - Tail & Convoy

Shouldn't be much of a problem for you though... don'k the convoy light is an MOT requirement!

Cool thanks..

Yep it is a 12v (I need to take a look at the id plate on the seatbox again I think it said 12v cargo)

Yep the seller pointed out the very rusty convoy light which I tested and isnt working but not a problem really.. The diff pan on the back is still white too :-)

Just got to find somewhere that sells the proper nato green paint now as the current paint is very faded (looks to only have 1 or 2 coats on there though which will make repainting easier :-)
and give the soft top a major clean too!

Cheers

Ben

There is a guy who attends all of the shows who sells any colour of NATO paint... well.. as long as it's black, green or white!

Think he might have a website but I can't remembner it at the moment.

Try Anchor Supplies for the NATO paint.
1980 SIII Lightweight 2.25 Petrol - completely standard.
1991 Range Rover Vogue SE 3.9 V8 - now on LPG (sorted!), 2" lift, mud tyres, and more to come...

If you need further advice try the Ex Military Land Rovers Association dedicated to vehicles like yours and mine. If you've got a problem they'll have somebody with experience of it. Google EMLRA and you should find them. If you have trouble let me know I'm a member.

I will give them a look :-)
Think it will be a while now before it gets painted as the weather has turned rather too wet again!
