I decided to do a gearbox and transfer box oil change on my recently acquired S3. I is very whiny but quite in fourth, I hoped that it was just old oil as the seller said "recent gearbox" however it wasnt.

The oil was like dishwater and frothy (assume its been wading)

But worst of all there were some rather large lumps of metal in the drain plug. Some looked tooth, but one was definitely a bit of bearing race. Therfore I reckon the box is living on borrowed time, especially if I do a spot of pay-play of roading.

So should I wait for it to fail (its only a toy rover so I dont rely on it)
Get a recon box (Â£350 ish and fit it)
Refurbish it myself (as its taking the box out the car that looks hard, the bench job may be less painfull)

What do you think then?

Pick up a cheap second hand one, and rebuild the one you take out then you are still running

Looks like it needs to see a dentist

Get a refurb box, to much of a pain to rebuild yourself (and will probably cost more looking at the selection of shrapnal that has come out).

Get a s/hand one - free/Â£20 or so - and bung it in. 17 chances of getting a good 'un before you've bought a recon

i no it is obviouse but look at ebay, i tend to get some decent stuff off there.

im sure if you go to old sodbury sort out on the 20th of october you will find one there and there so easy to strip and rebuild

got one with overdrive off ebay Â£200 may have been too much (although it does have the transfer box too)

thats a very good deal you got there cus the over dive alone would have cost you Â£250

Hopefully the O/D is in good condition, or it will cost you that again to get it overhauled....

Can anyone tell if this is definitely an overdrive?

See the unit on the end at the left hand side and possibly the lever going up to the middle of the main box?

I found a pdf of the fitting guide but im new to landies so cant quite picture everything properly yet.

cant realy see it properly but yep that looks like an overdrive to me, (or rear PTO) should also have a leaver off it with a black knob on ot (end of the shaft) presume this is missing???

It didn't have an hydraulic winch on it did it?

Hello,

I have not collected it yet so cnat tell, the seller said it had overdrive, but I want to make sure before I take it home. Ill look up some part numbers etc so I make sure. There is a definitely a lump o it, but is a good idea to check that its not a PTO.

That lump on the back looks like the O/D, plus there are some new-looking gearbox mounts there as well :)

Oh.... make sure you get the O/D levers as well, these are a pain if people don't include them with the sale of an O/D :x

Personally I'd sell the OD and that should leave you with a free gearbox.

Unless you do lots of miles then it's not really worth keeping hold of, except for the fact that you like lots of nobs...... :shock:

Well I got the box and the bloke was a real landrover enthusiast and I doubt he'd sell me a duffer, whats more whilst chatting about all the bits he had I mentioned I was after a wheel as mine has no spare. He gave it to me for nowt (I diddnt have any more cash on me)! Nice chap.

I may sell the OD as the landy is wont be gong that far, but as I have found a very nasty hole where the engine x-member meets the chassis im not sure if the car is a viable project. Its booked in tomorrow at a landy specialst to see if they think its fixable. Expect a new thread about what to do if it isnt!
