Got mine at 21 after my old Citroen ZX expired. Amusing part is that at the time I had several friends say "It's a woman's car" or "It's mumsy". Given a fairly sizable percentage of Disco drivers I know are mid-20s blokes I think the image may finally be changing!

I think you will see an increasing number of younger drivers with them now, as the prices have dropped to such a level as to make them a reasonable proposition. They're cheaper than a Defender but you still have the off road ability and the ready availability of spares and upgrades. Also with the older ones there is little in the way of electronics, making them both simple to fix DIY and capable of being repaired by a small independent garage.

I was 33, and that was over 9 years ago, still driving the same Disco today.

However, I'd been driving various Land Rovers with the Army since I was 18, including a Series 2 Ambulance and  V8 101 Ambulance, before then, and in civvy street afterwards I'd driven a V8 Range Rover Ambulance and V8 110 4x4 Emergency Response Vehicle.

Out of those, the V8 110 was the best to drive as it had less bodywork and was fairly quick to 60mph, the next best was the Series 2, followed by the 101, and the absolute worst was the Range Rover Ambulance, which was utter crap to drive.

Best non-Ambo would be the Lightweight, absolute joy to drive, although I made the mistake of taking my HGV with the Army and always ended up in Bedford Mk's or CL's towing some great big generator or trailer box body, the best Bedford I drove was the straight 6 RL, despite the cramped cab.

Current Fully Comp is £220 on the Disco, but I plan to keep it another two years and then upgrade to a Range Rover Vogue V8 4.4, since by then second hand values will be much lower.

I was 40 when I got mine. Yes I have got the cardigan togo with it but Kim threw my pipe out. I have got some knackered slippers to make up for that. Insurance is £570 which includes greenflag.

Yes I will be changing insurance providers in September
