I prefer the 200tdi...it's a personal thing.
The 300tdi is a little more refined & it's torque curve is slightly different to 200tdi making it a little more user friendly.
200tdi are the basic of the tdi's & great for the home mechanic & overlanders as easy to repair.
Both are very robust & should return somewhere between 26-36mpg.
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

200 for me, but thats because I have one.
The 300 is more refined as mentioned above the only issue I have heard about the 300 is that the cooling system is not as good as the 200.

but all personal choice I think

Just to pick up on this.....

Have I got this right? (all relating to LT77 in a Defender):
The 200tdi will fit onto any LT77
300tdi needs an R380 bell housing on the front of an LT77

Sort of....

Defender spec 200tdi will bolt straight onto a Defender spec LT77 or LT77s

A Disco spec 200Tdi needs two holes enlarging and tapping in the rear cover to fit a Defender spec Lt77 - as the bolt pattern on a Disco Lt77 bellhousing is different to a Defender Lt77 bellhousing.

To fit a Lt77 to a 300tdi you need to change the 300tdi rear cover (i.e. the bit that houses the flywheel) for a Na, Td, or 200Tdi one...  it will then bolt straight up to a Lt77 bellhousing.

Ive got a 300 in my 1990 90 fitted onto an lt77 box and have not bothered with the lower 6 bolts and have had no issues. The cooling problem is all to do with the water pump being higher up on the 300 engine and the 'P' gasket that is behind the water pump housing on the block. If the later type gasket is fitted(metal) instead of the older paper type then there is no issue with it. The problem lies with the amount of coolant that is above the water pump. 1 small leak and the pump soon becomes just a paddle. If you can get hold of a header tank from a range rover with the coolant low level switch and fit it to your truck with a warning light etc you should be able to avoid any overheats. If you are fitting to an early TD or NA defender then change the header tank to a plastic type as the steel one is smaller and the caps usually open and loose coolant as there is more pressure in the system. Since doing mine I have been very impressed and it drives lovely.
I love to get my landy down and dirty

i've just finished putting an 300 onto an lt77, first conversion ive really done and if you can drill a few holes (Not a necessity but i felt more comfortable doing this than removing 6 studs) and a little bit of welding go for a 300. i'm really pleased with the  delivery of torque, is very smooth got a load of pics in my gallery

http://dfytr.homedns.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=39182&g2_page=1

my neighbors got a very nice 200 conversion, but but after coming on the test drive with me he now wants a 300.

only other thing i might do is put a disco transfer box on, but wont decide till i get it on the motorway. Would have liked to get an R380 if i could have afforded it, but i kno people whom have been running v8s on lt77s with no probs for years.

I cant justify paying more than an extra £100 for somthing with a 300tdi engine rather than a 200. the 200 is a bit noisyer (makes it sound like you are thrashing it more than a 300) there is no real difference in power or torque.

i would much rather have a worn 200 than a worn 300. brand new out of the box i would side with the 300.

i'll go with you on that, if i were to go for a tdi with anything ove 100k it would have to be a 200 just for the simplicity of fixing bits and pieces. you'll get a low milage 300 for the same price as a worn 200 tho
