I have a double carden prop on my 200 tdi. It was 50mm short so i cut it in half and machined up a 50mm spool piece,pressed it in and welded it back up.

seems to run fine.

Could be a number of things then,
1) Wheel out of balance
2) A CV complaining (do you notice a click going 'round sharp corners?)
3) A rear prop complaining (check CVs and splines)
4) It could also be a wheel bearing (are the breaks spongey?)
5) Swivel bearings having a whinge

There you go, a short list to check!

As a quick final question, do you notice much wander on the motorways, self centering not what it could be or if on sharp corners, the steering suddenly feels like it's going very light?

mobi:
(1) new wheels and tyres but same on the old wheels and tyres
(2) no all good there
(3) rear prop new donut and UJs
(4) the brakes are going a bit spongy not checked the wheel bearings
(5) no , no whinge
as for "wandering on motorways" it's as much as you would expect for a disco with 2" lift running 255/85 with the rear arb removed  :shock:
self centres more that i would like sometimes.

i had the old front prop throw a wobbly at 70mph going down the motorway  then spat it out, (the prop)
i've only got vibration since putting the new prop on, and the diff is ok and has a newer transferbox with no slack which is why the old prop went.
the vibration is though the drive train not in the steering (side to side) or at the wheels.
