after a weekend of laning in the LAKE DISTRICT, I'd thought i'd ask you lot if any of you encounter the same sort of noises that i get...When doing serious rock crawlin, or heavy lanes and twisty stuff, my 110 DC (which has 3"lift, dislo cones front/rear) makes the noisiest glankin and boinkin going...should i grease the cones and lube up the rest of the hardware..?

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE SPRING RELOCATING TO ME,  THE ONE WAY TO STOP THIS IS TO SWAP TO REVERSE DISLOCATION CONES, AND HAVE THEM ON THE AXEL.

i rather like my rather loud klanking noise as springs re-locate, it amuses me somewhat as other look on in horror thinking something just broken  :P  :P
as zulu said tho, reverse-location cones are excellent and silent......then again so are jubilee clips  :P  :P

ours dislocate as they would with reverse cones anyway :) could be due to the fact that the retaining plate bolts were mashed, so i smacked the crap out of it to get the coils off instead, and just chose to leave it like that :D need to make some cones up... makes a lovely BANG when the coils seat properly after coming back down slightly off,

Whoa, there Tex.

You're not making a huge amount of sense, but clearly you're riled about something. We can't allow you to personal about stuff, and trust me, we won't.

Take 5 away from the keyboard, take a few deep breathes and calm it down a notch. We'll still be here.

But, you will have to watch they words.

most LR's make a few clunking / banging noises when driving over rocks / large obstacles so just keep an eye on stuff when you get out and wander round the vehicle but other than that i wouldnt worry about it ada

As I've already said, no getting personal here.

It's not a request, and if things don't change I'll lock this thread.

Some contributors here have already been told when enough is enough, and trust me, there has been enough.

Now behave, or be posting somewhere else.

Absolutely nothing, Ada. Not your fault and definately no need to apologise.

As was said, your bangin' and a graunchin' is probably just the springs relocating, so it shouldn't be owt to worry about. But it does sound alarming when it happens, doesn't it!

If in doubt then get someone to drive it slowly over rough ground and watch the springs relocate and listen for the noises.

Some relocation cones are quiter than others, i'm not talking about reverse/bottom cones here, just top mounted cones. The D44 cones i've seen/heard are very quiet compare to most others.

Yes its the springs going back in place. Mine does the same on the front but not on the rear as I have the QT relocators on the bottom. Its a lot quiter that way.

i have the same issue,  dislocating cones ,   or turn head cones as i get the comments your cvs gone or did you break a drive shaft.

but they have grown on me, i m liking the sound or is that i dont want to shell out for other types as these were cheap.

i find mainly the front that makes the most noise

The first time I heard a set relocate with chassis mounted relocation cones I nearly had a heart attack (was a passenger in the back... and they went back with a BANG!!!)

As pointed out, this is only a problem with chassis mounted relocation cones.... axle mounted ones (like QT jobbies) make next to no noise when the spring gets guided back into place - most of the time I don't hear them re-seat.

If you want to see one cause of the problem, jack up one side of the LR and when the spring is fully dislocated, have a look at the relationship between the spring and the guide - you will notice that it is off set.  To be re-seated onto the chassis mounted relocation cone, the spring gets physically forced to take a different path, due to the fact the axle piviots around the trailing arm - i.e the spring (and thus the axle) does not go up and down in a straight plane.

Axle mounted guides do not suffer from the same problem as the axle comes back up in natural arc, pivioting around the trailing arm,it meets the spring that is hanging in vertical position, and doesn't need to force the spring in a different direction....

I hope this sort of makes sense...  will try and find some photos to explain.

Not entirely sure about that.  Specifically I would have thought it was the spring catching on the top spring mount that causes the bang. When chassis mounted cones relocate they are still forcing the spring across but there isn't the same sort of mount to catch against. But i may be wrong.

Noticed with my qt rears that the spring doesn't always come back down onto the cone. Last time it 'reseated' onto the brake caliper, which rally was alarming! The brake pipe actually went up into the spring and then back dow to the caliper.

I've not seen the spring catch on the op mount with a cone fitted, but again I could be wrong....

Thinking about it, it also depends on the shape of the relocation cone.

The cheaper type of relocation cone (which is quite a large diametre) causes two problems....

As the spring tries to 'run' back down the relocation cone, is goes on at an angle and partially jams itself.. then as the weight of the vehicle comes down on it fully it gets 'un-stuck' and comes back down to earth with a bang.

The other problem I've seen (again with the usually cheaper relocation cones) is that they fit around the outside of the inner ring forming the spring seat.
This then results in a tight fit inside the spring over the last inch or so of travel before the spring is on it's seat... thus the spring sticks slightly as the weight of the vehicle comes down on it - the bang comes as the weight of the vehicle overcomes the 'interference fit' of the cone inside the spring... resulting in the spring banging down on the upper spring mount.

Odd about the spring not reseating with your QT cones... I've never had a problem with mine, the spring always reseats on the cone.

The spring will catch on the inside ring of the mount. Going on at an angle and jamming sounds quite likely. Either way its not really a problem but i prefer my qts. Shame i can't stop the fronts doing it!

As for coming right off, it hasn't happened very often. Only once when i didn't notice till it actually happened. I assume it was just a quirk of the terrain. Can't see how it should happen!

Just get the QT front cones too... although you also need an external damper mount... i.e. so the damper is outside of the spring... would post a pic, but haven't got one of mine to hand...

Have llama 4x4 challenge kit on the front (which is gwyn lewis stuff). It works well and represents good value for money. Though i think i'm in need of cranked radius arms, which would probably mean panhard rod and fancy prop at the same time. Think we will wait for the moment. IT works well anyhow rti is around 920+ mark.
