EGR Blanking

(1/2) > >>

mickelson:
Apologies for raising an issue which appears to have been discussed to death, however, i havent got all the time in the world to read every comment on EGR. What i am after is a simple explanation on why and how everyone is blanking off the EGR. Is it simply to just prevent the exhaust gases going back into the system and increasing the emissions / reducing power. I struggle everytime on MOT but luckily pass. Can i simply just blank off the EGR  exhaust pippe as shown on one of the discussion? cheers in advance

Staffy:
Yes the EGR puts a % of the exhaust gasses back in to the intake.
When they are getting older they become choked up etc.. with gunk and start putting too much exhaust gas back into the inlet side.

By blanking it off you stop it from doing this and thus improve emissions power.

You can buy a kit from a number of places with the needed parts and simple instructions, it really isn't hard.

While you are doing the EGR blanking I found it worthwhile and some other have to clean out the induction side of the engine.
Inlet manifold, intercooler and hoses. Also worth running a good quality diesel additive through it to clean the injectors etc..

Doing all the above on my 167k miles 300tdi made a massive improvement in the emissions, in the power delivery and general pull of the Disco.

Hope That is of help
Phil

Yep...blank off the egr at the exhaust manifold & remove the whole egr system...it'll be caked up....& fit a straight through pipe on the induction side.
D44 do the following kit for a Td5...but you'll get the idea:
http://www.devon4x4.com/shop.php?mode=productview&product=222&sitelang=&cat=25&subcat=58

I'd also use some of these products to clean the induction side & injectors.

http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/fueladditives.shtml

You should find you'll have more usable power after the egr is removed & induction side cleaned out...It would be worth cleaning the intercooler, checking the hoses & renewing the air filter if it hasn't been done for a while.

If you are running a 200/300tdi & still struggle to get through the emission run it on veg oil before taking to the MOT...it'll flythrough the emissions

For the kit I got for my 300tdi go http://cheviot4x4.com/shop/Vehicles/Discovery/Cat/Performance/Product/300%20Tdi%20EGR%20Blanking%20Kit/

To clean out the Intercooler and inlet there is a sticky on the forum.

Ditto what L90OOK says about veg oil and save yourself some money in the process

Did mine today with a blanking plate and top hose I bought off ebay. Even without cleaning out the intercooler or inlet pipework the difference is quite noticeable.  :)

Tomorrow's jobs are to get the transfer lever moving and install the new hands free phone kit.

I'd almost forgotten how much fun owning a Discovery is  :P
