whats the notable difference between a lt77 and an lt95.i have an auto but don't know whats in it :oops:

LT77 and LT95 are both Manual boxes.

Without going into the anorak detail.....

The LT77 is a 5 speed box, the LT95 is a four speed.

LT95 is a bit noisier and agricultural,  but the LT95 is MUCH stronger and better suited (IMHO) to the V8 engine.

There is the (more common) ZF4 auto box and the Torqueflight 3 speed.

The torqueflight is a bit big and heavy and saps more power than the ZF, but it can take a load more input torque and as such is better for big conversions like those silly diesel V8s which people put in.

The majority of Rangie Classics have the ZF4 in them...   gear shifter should go :  P - R - N - D - 3 - 2 - 1

LT95 also has an integral transfer box.  Seen in the Stage 1 V8, I think, and also early Range Rovers, but I'm not sure what else.

LT95 uses a vacuum operated centre diff lock, LT77 uses the LT230 transfer box (which has a number of variants itself)

There are more differences, but those are the most pertinent I think.

As you say, LT95 was used in Early RR Classic, 110 V8, LR 101 (shortened version), Series 3 Stage 1

Isn't the 3 speed a Chrysler box, I've heard they're a bit clunky in the drivetrain.

Yes it's Chrysler.
I drove one a while back, trying to diagnose an odd noise for a mate, and have to say that this particular one was quiet, smooth and clunkless (?). Trouble is, there are so many parts to wear outside of the 'box, my ZF's clunk a bit, but it's mostly the axles it comes from. Worst thing I think with the 3 spd is the linkages on the side for kickdown etc. What a mess!

Does the LT95 have an extra stick, like the series box?

LT95 should have 2 levers...  the main gear lever and the high / low selector.
