give the disco (3.5 v8 efi) a quick blast doen the road (4000rpm for about 2 mins) all was fine parked up at home. Give it the normal checks all was ok. Just gone to start her up and the oil light stays lite and you can hear that no oil is getting pumped around. any ideas were to start looking as i need the car for work tomorrow (i start a 3.45 So no bus).

Usual thing is to check the wires to the pressure switch, if these are ok then remove the switch, clean & re-fit. If this is ok the next thing to check is the oil pump. If you know that you have no oil pressure then you may need to move directly to the oil pump. Hope this is of some help, remember to pack the oil pump with petroleum jelly before you re-start.

Its defo the pump you can hear the engine running very bad witrh no oil running around. plus checked the pressure switch thats ok. looking at the rave cd its a job and a half to remove the pump. unless anyone knows of a easy way as the rave cd is remove dissy, front engine cover, and a load of other bits.

You have to remove the timing cover etc but itâ€™s a fairly easy job that doesn't take long. Youâ€™ll need a new oil pump by the sound of it.

Yea think it is a new pump. just put a new filter on it and turned the engine over and no oil in the new filter so pump could be kapput or what drives the pump thinking that a gear could be broken.

Anybody know if i undo the bolts at the bottom of the oil pump above were the filter goes will it release the pump.

ok undid the bolts and the lower half of the pump came off. found the oil pressure relief valve was stuck in the tube and took a lot to move it. When it did come out fouind scoring on the valve and in the housing for it cleaned it up and pushed it back in using the spring removed the spring and the valve was stuck tight again so think this is the problem. When i turn the engine by hand the gears turn ok. So could i be right in thinking the relief valve is kapput

Its a bit Late

But my V8 oil pump had to be packed with vasaline to prime it ......It may be the case that after changing the filter it may need re priming

A stuck PRV would cause the probelms you are having. Did you use an oil flush at all?

No but did use a oil aditive in the oil, put it in about a week ago. Will try some wet and dry on the valve and surround and see if that frees it up a bit.

Well i give up. did the valve got to sliding like a godd'um. Pack the gears with loads of p.g and i means loads. fired it up and NO OIL PRESSURE again. had a look at taking the timing cover off but have not a clue how to do it. havent even got a socket to get the crank pully off and see if the keys is still in place. So got no choice but to give up before i start hitting it with a big hammer. Why is it when you need the car it packs up on you. I am running out of time as i will be at work monday and down devon for 2 to 3 days and i need the car for a job interview in warrington on thursday and i cant get time off work as another driver is off. So if anyone got nothing better to do tomorrow (sunday) and knows v8's please come and give me a hand as i havent a clue.

Ok mark the position of your dizzy with a scribed line on both the dizzy and the engine so it goes back in the right place, then remove it.

The oil pump drive is taken from the bottom of the dizzy, you need to check this is going round properly, you can make a tool from an old screwdriver or something to whizz the oil pump round with a drill before the engine turns over.

If there is no pressure it could be the pick up pipe is blocked or damaged too.

Has the PJ moved from the oil pump body yet?

With the oil cooler et el in the oil pickup circuit it takes a while to build up oil pressure. Is there any evidence that the oil is moving at all? oil in the filter, oil in the oil cooler pipes?

had a very small amount of oil in filter. The disco dont have a oil cooler on it that i can see or nothing connected to the filter area were it would be. I cranked the engine over by hand and saw the gears turning. Just thinking would waynes oil tretment make the oil to to thick to go up the filter in the oil sump. will have to walk to the shop and get some more p.j as not got any left.

Don't you need to fill teh oil filter, then pack the oil pump, then if you have that tool to spin the oil pump via the dizzie dogs then you look somewhere to see if oil is pumping. I had to do all this and the tool was the saviour here.

There is also a description somewhere of how to prime the pump by forcing oil up through the filter I think.

Oh just great took the dissy out and guess what. The shaft has snapped just below the gear so it as new dissy time. Just what i really needed. Thanks for you help chaps. And dont ask me why i never took the dissy out in the first place :roll: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

At one time Martins Motors near Droitwich had dizzies on offer www.mm4x4.com but don't about now.

Come on why would you check to see if your dizzie shaft had snapped!

It does say you need to remove the dissy when removing the oil pump in the rave cd. but as i was just taking off the bottom cover of the pump i didn't remove the dissy. :roll:

S'pose but I doubt that I'd have thought of checking if I'd lost all oil pressure.

Got any prices for a replacement yet?

mm4x4 want Â£126 for a new dizzie but I bet you need to add VAT etc! Locally I expect I could find someone who might get parts to repair it. The shaft fits on quite easily I think.

Just looking around now but are two dissy a early one and a later one and dont know yet which one i have. One has the slot in the bottom for the oil pump to fit in to (which is the one i have) and one has a blade in the bottom for the oil pump to fit in to.

found so mine is the late type dissy as the oil pump has the blade in it.

well big thanks to steve i have a replacement dissy. went to fit it and had to move the oil pump shaft to line it up with the dissy and guess what the shaft was solid. so undid the bottom of th pump tryed turing the gears and no luck they would not move. took out the gears slid out nice and easy. put them back in and all turned til they got to one point and went solid again check everthing all seamed good til i notice when i had the gears in my hand and turned them that at one point the gears lock together. so looks like the dissy shaft snapped as the gears had stopped in the postion were they lock. And when i started the engine back up to move the disco it snapped the shaft. as the gears had locked. probley a million to one chance of the gears stopping in that one spot. so its new gears time now.

Right this is now offically doing my head in. Had the oil pump apart twice now cleaned it smoothed it check for any ruffness just put it back together gave it a good test spin with the bottom cover off everything turns nice and sweet. put botttom cover on place drill and tool onto the oil pump shaft. to prim it and guess what the %%&)*(*!!!! is solid again in fact in nearly burnt my drill out trying to turn it. all i can think off now is the bottom cover must be worn or something and its just not playing at tall.

Isn't it possible that the base plate has warped? I thought that this was a known problem and I think I bought a new plate when I refurbished my own pump but I can't be ceratin.

No grit anywere the gears and housing are smooth. So new bottom plate ordered. so will be fitting it next weekend and fingers crossed it will work again. :twisted:

Got and fitted new bottom plate for the oil pump primed her up ok fired her up and yes got oil pressure back. But think the crank shells have worn down a bit as i can hear a very faint knocking.
