i replaced the seal on my 98 300tdi 2 years ago and its been fine since, i needed a 10 ton hydraulic puller to remove the steering arm and it wanted all of that to shift it as well :shock:
if you like having oil run down your arm you can do it while its still bolted in the car but it can be a right pig to get the seal past the circlip groove and into position
