Best bet then is to get it welded up and brazed to make it oil-tight.

I saw a big-wing sump on a twink that my mate hgas and the whole sump had been leaded, the metal underneath was porous :o .

Yer they are still on back order we rang up mjlandrover!
yer i think were braizing it up but theres like 4 holes and the metals pretty thin in places but it should be ok! Only problem is i don't want to be chasing holes around all the time!
Kind Regards
Sam

That's why I suggested brazing not welding.  If the metal is thin or pitted in any way then welding will be a 'mare, but with brazing you overlap the joint, the brass fills the gap in between so you can cover the pitted area completly and/or give the sump a skin of brass.

Well weve finished the sump but its braized everywhere. The engine was from the isle of mull so the salty air has not done the sump well! There was this huge patch on it the had been welded then filled with epxy resin and then brazed over which is leaking a little bit but we can't get it to melt at all so we still have the tiniest of leaks! Well i'll keep an eye on it and see if one ever turns up!
Thanks all for your help  :)
Sam
