Tonight mine decided to go wrong where the prop shaft connects has gone loose and the oil has came out.

my first question is :-
Is this a common fault

the Second question is :-
Are the front diffs the same as the rear diff. if not has anyone got a 413 Rear axle. fairly local to me.

baz no a front diff wont fit the rear axle im afraid
has the main pinion bolt just come lose or hase the bearing calapsed?

Hi i belive my ratio is 3.909 a standard SJ413 the alternative is to get a pair of Vitara diff i suppose,

has anyone got 2 front diffs for a Vitara. Also anyone relativly local to me know how to the swap?

hey baz,if its just the output bearing gone drop your rear prop remove nut and prop flange (you may need a puller to get it off the splines) fetch the seal out then tease the bearing out with 2 screwdrivers(its only a taper bearing) then you need a timken 30306m bearing available from enginering or bearing supliers and a 72x40x10 seal good luck.

What i have one so far is taken out the drive shafts undone the diff but yet to break the seal on it.

I have been under the car and the bit the prop connects to is loose and with move a few cm up and down and left to right can i get at that bearing with out taking the whole diff apart If i just undo the bolt where the prop connects can i get to it all from there?

yes you can get at the front taper bearing and seal from there but you are better off taking the diff out and replacing them both.also you can give your ring and pinion a check over and set your backlash.Ive put some pictures on of my spare diff which i am rebuilding hope they help.

You will really need to do the job with the diff stripped as shown above because you need to get the outer race of the bearing out. This needs to be drifted out from behind unless you have a suitable puller to extract it from the front.

Don't be tempted to just use the inner race and roller cage in the old outer race. It won't survive long.

In any case, if the front bearing has collapsed, the rear will almost certainly be damaged too.

The gasket stick diff in the axle casing quite badly, but a copper faced mallet carefully applied usually does the trick! Or a dead blow mallet. Don't use a 'proper' hammer though!

Oh, and don't forget to take the half shafts out first  :lol:

here is a picture of your pinion drive with outer bearing removed just to give you an idea of what you are dealing with,also while the axle is stripped its an ideal time to check your halfshaft bearings good luck.ps just take your time you will be suprised how straight forward a job it is.

Thanks for your advice so far I got the diff off tonight and undone the four bolts that hold the side bearings in and pulled them off and the main ring. then undone the big bolt on the bottom and the shaft pretty much fell out and this is the result of it.

I am guessing that the cage i have used to hold the bearings in but has dissapeared the inner bit of the bearing looks like it is still on the shaft ?
The problem is i can't find none of the the bits of bearings at all anywhere.

yes now its stripped replace them all i can,t find the number of the roller bearings so just clean one up and take it with you.when reassembling remember not to get your pinion gear to tight on your ring gear(backlash)and you will soon be offroadin again.as for your bearings i would say they have been ground up in the diff.

yes change the 2 roller bearings on the crown wheel and the 2 taper bearings on the pinion gear take all the old bearings with you just in case they are different size to mine.my diff is spanish so there may be a difference.

Looks like there is a collapsable spacer between the bearings. You should replace that too if that's what it is.

Take the outer races out of the diff case to take with you. The outer race often has all the relevant bearing info marked on them.

Hi well you will be pleased to know i am nearly done now.

I sorted the bearings bolting it back together but need to know how to set it up I can get it tight so the diff won't move at all and i can get it so it moves one way but its hard to start moving it the other way. Is there and easy way to set the side bits ?

as i put the bearing and bits back together i have been putting gear oil on it for a little bit of lube.

Also what the best thing  to clean Oil / Grease of brake disc. as when the bearing broke it covered the whole rear axle include my rear discs in grease and oil so i need to clean the disc's and calipers.

nice one baz pleased it went ok.don,t set to much pressure on your ring gear you should be able to turn your pinion gear 2 to3mm without your ring gear moving that is your backlash.any alcohol based electrical cleaner will clean your brakes up.happy offroading.
