I have found a couple of markings under the paint on my 88' swb, both in the same place on the front doors. It looks like a head & shoulder side view bust with what looks like a long stick coming up in front of the head with material or something tied to the stick shaft, then what looks like a curved blade of some sort that goes over the head like a sythe on a long stick. Anyone have any ideas as to what it is or how i can find out about it..

Does it look anything like the picture  to this post?

It's a very crappy photo of the windscreen tac symbol used by my last unit - 6 GS Sqn RLC.  Its commonly called the sarascen and the picture is of the simplified version used for sub-unit recognition when out on loops or in harbors etc, there's a lot of history behind it, but as per usual with REME I didn't bother my arrse to learn it!

Can find out more though if you want - if its a similar thing..........

 Edited to moan about crappy computers, phones and other stuff that makes it too feckin difficult to get a simple photo of a bit of luminous plastic film on the side of a thermal cup onto a web-page.

Will try again at the weekend!

Just found another picture of it - its on my company car, Here on ORRP

Look at the top left of the windscreen of Mr 62. Ignore the spanner under it, (that just lets everyone know I'm the 5th emergency service), its the top bit I'm on about.  Thats the Saracens Head.  Look familiar?

can't get any pics up on that link mate, i did find a saracen head on the net though, it was orange coloured and different from the one i can see on my motor. Although mine has no colour to it anymore the actual blade on the end of the stick is long and curved. It literally starts at the forehead and curves right over the top to the back of the head, is that similar to yours?

Bloody hell that looks creepy! Great photo, kinda says DEATH in no subtle way! Have you checked your brakes lately??

I think it may have something to do with Artists Rifles?

Well, its not a sarascen thats for sure so you can rule that one out!

It does look very much like a grim reaper, but I've not come across that on me travels of late, or ever come to think of it.......

I'll do some more pondering and ask about...........

This is bugging me now. Try the EMLRA as I am sure someone can come up with an answer. There is a chap in their forum, Niel, username is Artists Rifles and he has a similar drawing as his avatar - perhaps he can shed more light on it? Of course, he might have to kill you afterwards!!!

Been racking my brains and i think it was used by one of the dragoon guards not sure which one but it was a unoffical insignia used by them. Will have to dig out my old pics and see whats on them.

I posted this on a military forum, one reply was that this was used by D Sqn, Royal Dragoon Guards in the past as an unofficial Sqn emblem

Might point you in the right direction

I have some one who when I get his email address I will pass it on to he may recognise it too

In my experience, at some point most ftr sections, squadrons, wksps etc come up with something (generally before a tour) and then plaster everything with it, and im guessing it was the same in most other regiments. I know 26AES had a "winged castle" that by the time the ftr section finished it looked like a fist going some place it never should (well not outside a german filth movie!)
