not quite,
could also be argued it stands for injection as the TDi was landrovers first Turbo  Direct injection engine as the TD & NA were both indirect injection engines

Thought all diesels are classed as injection, and "i" or "I" is intercooler.

"Di" - direct injection

i've had other motors with turbo diesels and intercoolers but all the indirect injection have been TD's or Turbo Diesel's and all the direct injections have been tdi's

He's right, Di is used for direct injection, it's one of the ways of making oil burners drive more like real cars ie 'high speed' engines.  Di engines don't have the restiction inherant in indirect injection at higher speed namely the throttling effect of the pre-combusion chamber inlet.

The downside is slightly higher fuel consumption and the rattly noise we all know and love, because the combustion is happening in the top face of the piston which is effectively loose in the bore, rather than inside the pre-combusion chamber like on a Recardo head for example.

May have got it wrong (been a few years since it mattered), but if memory serves, direct injection engines typical have a lower specific fuel consumption (more power for less fuel) making them either more powerful or more economical, however the down side was they were worse on emissions compared to indirect injection. Also due to there smoother running indirect injection is more suitable to higher rpm engines.

One big advantage of indirect injection is when you remove the head with the injectors still in it, the tips of the injectors are protected inside the combustion chambers, where as with some direct injection heads the tips of the injectors stick down below the bottom of the cylider head so if you take it off the block and just place it down on a bench the same way up you will flatten the tips, wrecking the injectors.
