Maps
« on: July 07, 2007, 22:05:36 »
Hi

What are the best maps to buy, generally speaking?  Basically I don't know anything about maps, I can read them but dont know which ones are better to use.  If I was to be more specific, the map I require would be for Morocco, even though I have GPS I would still feel more comfortable with a paper map, you never know!

Also, is a compass really neccessary?  If it is, what brand/type should I be looking for.  I've been looking around on the net but these are to areas I don't know anything about and there are just to many maps/compasses out there, I think I will require the collective experience of the fellow MC members on this one.

Thanks
Pete

Can't help you on maps of Morroco but compass wise buy a Silva one. Massive range, but just go for something sizeable as they're easier to use and try to get one with the scale on to match the ,maps you'll be using.

The best general maps for the whole of Africa are the Michelin 7 series maps. The one for Morocco is 742.  Go only for the RED 7 series.

Pete,

Thught you might appreciate this to help you get aquainted to using a compass!

You might also want to look at other ways of identifying North in case the compass dies as well (Such as stars, stick shadow etc).
