200 tdi cambelts..what are the differences
« on: June 25, 2007, 17:28:53 »
i replaced the cambelt on my 200 tdi 200 miles ago now its snapped again

now when i replaced last time i gave the supplier (mm 4x4 in droitwich)
my chassis number and i replaced the belt and tensioners
when i fitted it however i thought the belt was too small because with the tensioner on full travel(loose) the belt wouldnt go on..it did in the end (with great difficulty) but there was no slack left to take up on the belt

are there different length belts ?? because i think that the belt has been over tightened..

help??????
if i can still see my bonnet then the water aint deep enough!!!!

When I did mine, with a new tensioner, it was very tight going on. When I asked they said there was only the one. When my brother did his he said has didn't seem as tight as mine !!

WELL WHEN THEY SOLD ME THE KIT THEY NEEDED MY CHASSIS NUMBER..
I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN IDLER PULLEYS AND TENSIONERS BUT I NEED TO KNOW FOR SURE SO I CAN COMPLAIN!!!!
SOMETHING IS AMISS BECAUSE THE BELT HAS SHREDDED AFTER 200 MILES AND THERE IS NO MUCK INSIDE THE COVER AND THE PULLEYS ARE FINE

I AM GOING BACK THIS WEEK TO GET A NEW BELT SO ILL ASK THEM

Please keep me informed.

I would be most interested because as I said mine was damn tight going on.

I'd rather do the job again than have change push rods from a broken belt.

Im about to do mine on my 300tdi n these have the same problem of 2 different kits so i rang paddocks gave them my chassis number and the told me which kit to get. however i also learned that the 300s had a mod done on the earlier models n the mod was a different shaped tensioner. maybe its the same case for you.

the 200 disco and defender belt set ups are different
did they send you a defender belt ?
as the defender is shorter as it doesnt have a idler pulley only a tentioner

the belts are usualy tight to fit on a disco, most of the time you cant fit them without removing the tentioner then fitting it when the belt it in place

for a belt so snap within 200miles its either over tentioned or its been levered on with a screwdriver

what age is your 300
afink 97 on the crank pully mod was done

but all 300s should now be running on the updated pullys as they should have had there belts done
usualy they have a yellow marker on the timing case to indicate this

to be on the safe side i'd be ordering the updated belt kit

well i went and seen mm about my belt..there is only one for a 200.
the part number of the broken one was correct...so i brought another belt..
i have just fitted the new belt and it went on a piece of cake
something amiss here..they are sending off the snapped belt to be checked because although the part numbers were the same the 1st one was shorter!!!!!!

anyhow im up and running now all ready for the weekend at telford
if i can still see my bonnet then the water aint deep enough!!!!

200TDi's are usually quite easy (I've never had a problem with them anyway). 300TDi is a bit of a swine though.
