200 tdi cam bearings
« on: June 06, 2007, 21:49:39 »
Is it possible to check to see if the cam bearings have moved in my 200tdi, giving me low oil pressure .
Cheers Rob

I think you'll only be able to see the edge of the one behing the camshaft sprocket. If they have moved sideways as well you might be able to see that through the pushrod holes. Otherwise I think you may need to remove the camshaft itself.

Having just had the same problem, except on a 300tdi.
Its possible to see the cam and bearings through the 2 plates on the side of the engine, this is very awkward to see clearly.
Best thing to do is as above remove the cam, the bearings; as in my case, with the side pieces removed didnt show the bearings moved.
Only when i removed the cam and the bearing fell out was it definatly down to the bearings.

Sorry for this late reply ,computer packed up,the oil pressure is very low on tick over and not much better with revs when oil is warm .
Done so much work on it since it drowned very annoying to still see low pressure .

Had new cam bearings fitted, they need to be honed in, but while its in bits have replaced all bearings gaskets etc. cleaning head at the moment and going to re seat valves while its in bits. Also going to replace clutch,4 piece, and fit new Rad.

Thought about a s/h replacement @£500+ but thought might still end up stripping and having to do what im doing now; if that makes sense?
So thought might as well strip this one.

The biggest problem is finding a company to do it, paid £85 inc. VAT.
That was for supply and fit of all 4 cambearings and honing.
Which isnt a bad price, then youve got all the gaskets, seals, new bolts etc.
I think ive got all the bits now so half way through putting it back together, but im in no rush. As i said you could buy a s/h unit and still have to do the same anyway; Unless your really lucky.
If you can afford it i would go for a recon block, or better still a bottom half with crank and cam already done, but the more you get the more you pay up to a "turn key" where all you have to do is put it back in but thats up in the £4000+ bracket, i guess ive spent around £300 give or take a few quid.
Phone your local Landie specialist, and ask where they get their machining done, and go from there. HTH Graham

Best left to someone who knows how to do it, apparently they are supposed to be line bored, but no one around here has the machine.
The company i used seem to know Landrover engines, and their bearings.
The bearing at the rear has to be done through a core plug.
Mines almost back together now, just need a couple of bolts, thread lock, RTV and a new Radiator; new clutch should be here wed.

If you have a Landrover specialist you use, ask them who they use for machine work & start there,if they cant do it ask if they know another machine shop that does; thats how i did it.

Well mines all back together and just been put back in the 90 runs a dream, no smoke, 25 psi on tickover, and 50+ at medium revs.

So far so good, hows yours going?
