« on: June 03, 2007, 12:50:23 »
hey everyone.. i have a little problem i hope 1 of u can answer...right, i was driving a 92 2.5td paj along a normal road, changed into 5th when something felt like it blew. loads of smoke & no acceleration. rolled it into a car park & got towed home. no battery left by the time we got there. wouldnt start again, but wants to turn over. finaly got it started & all it does is rattle lots & blows out loads of white smoke, but wont stay ticked over... changed the fuel filter, no change. cam belt is a little loose. could it be fuel pump timing? or worse.. or even the imobilizer? i dont know.. if anyone has any ideas.. plz post  :D  she cant die yet!!!!
cheers emma

may of jump a tooth or 2 on the timing belt, or youve blown your turbo.
wouldnt try to keep starting it, probably doing more damage.

better get it checked out.

It sounds like your timing belt has jumped probably caused by the balance belt breaking and getting caught up in the timing belt.

It can be reset quite easily but I would advise the replacement of both belts.

The SWB I have now had this problem when I bought it (very cheap) the mechanic who looked at it (for the seller) told them the fuel pump had gone, as did the AA mechanic. Needless to say the previous owner was very peeved when I reset the timing belt and drove it away with a sweetly purring engine

right.. someone came to look at it.. tightened a few pipes that were letting air in, got it started, all belts were working. he said it looks like the tension bar is out?idk.. anyway, sump guard is coming off later & he will be back to check it out.. but so far so good.. at least its running again(kinda), all looking more positive & not so expensive to fix lol
cheers for all your input.. very helpful  :D

herewegoagain, I'm concerned that you are about to be taken for a ride, it is not possible to tell if all belts are working or intact unless you take off the top timing belt cover.

Not sure what a tension bar is and again why the sump guard has to come off.

How did he get it started - did he have to use jump leads, and when it started was it extremely noisy?

If I lived a little closer to you I'd come and have a look at it for you :(

Maybe he meant 'tensioner' not tension bar?

Something similar happened to my fathers paj. But it was the front cover to the balance belt tensioner bearings had come adrift (due to the bearings going  ) it had done a few circuits in the cam belt before getting lodged behind the cambelt tensioner :?

This had knocked the fuel pump out of timing a notch giving similar symptoms to yours although it would idle, if somewhat roughly.
Maybe yours has moved further than just the one notch. If the camshaft has moved out of time from the crankshaft, then it's possible that a rocker has been bent or broken :( .

I replaced both belts and tensioners on the old man's and it now runs like a dream (smoother than mine even  )  I think the parts came to around £70 and if you do need to replace rockers they are £12 it's just finding someone to do the job that won't rip you off

I do know of someone that specialises in paj's and does travel a bit to work on them but not sure how far.

Hope it all goes well.

well i had someone tow her away, came back the next day fixed. apparently it was the balance belt? the bearings went, jumped 12 teeth, the belt was totally snapped in half with about 2 inches frayed each side & went up into the cam belt. got the belts & bearings replaced, timing re-done &  she's away like never before   £200 for it to be done.. not too bad i suppose

thanks to everyone for the advice & its nice to know there is a site like this where people are willing to help out  :D

oh & the other problem with the random rattle underneath... its still there & getting worse.. i havent got the money to fix that right now but its the next on the list... hopefully there is nothing else to go wrong
