Wheel Bearing Siezed
« on: June 01, 2007, 22:58:53 »
My 110 decided that it had enough of its O/S/R wheel bearing today so it totally seized & locked the whole transmission up    #-o ...no warning signs either
After getting it home I have managed to get the wheel bearing nuts off...after drilling & chiseling the inner nut off
To top it off the inner bearing race has welded itself to the stub axle so I can't get the hub off...tomorrow the Oxy Acetylene comes out
Below is a picture of the bearing when I took the drive flange off...
I'll put some more photo's tomorrow of the progress  [-o<
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

drive on it abit more and break the bearing up, thats what i do when its in that state
saves hours of faffing around with the bottles
then when the cage has broken up slide the hub off, grind a slit in the race and whack it, off it pops, polish stub up in lathe or by hand with hemry cloth
and bobs ya uncle

Hello mate

All done...new stub axle though      :-({|=
The bearing nut was welded to the stub axle...never mind, a big hammer & cold chisel sorted that  :) ...& the oxy acetylene sorted the rest

Did the other side too...just to be safe.
Whipped the diff pan off to check ARB ok & replaced the breather pipes.
All in all a good days work & total bill of about £140...not bad for a seized bearing :?

Below are the pictures of the hub & what remains of the bearing!...I must stop reversing it into the sea to launch the boat
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

PMSL...what are you launching the QE2

I'm pretty sure no salt water got in...the grease wasn't emulisified nor was the EP90 in the diff.  The drive flanges were sealed well with sealant ...just one of those things I guess

Hi

I would have got the inner race off the stub axle but the threads were stripped so no point...new stub axle it was

I do like the idea of garages fixing my land rovers for free though      8)
