Can a TD5 be run on SVO? I was thinking of running a 50:50 mix of SVO and Diesel. Or is it a case of modifying the fuel system?

I wouldnt, direct inj engines(I believe the td5 is direct aint it?) run too high a pressure for the veg oil and it seperates, and you bung everything up.
DONT run it Id say unless you can afford to be the MUD CLUB guinnea pig for the TD5 motor!

I have been looking into running my 300TDI on a mix without any alteration's, and from what i have read, and as mentioned here, this is not a good idea on direct injection engines ??

This does confuse me however, as its OK to go the whole hog and and run on pure oil (no mix) with the pre heating etc and separate tank ??

How can the direct injection be an issue with mixed (thinner) oil but not with non mixed (pre heated so thinner again) oil ??

I dunno, i am just confused now, sorry to take a bit off topic

I'm the mate!

Td5's have (i believe) a high pressure lift pump in the fuel tank that feeds the common rail directly, conversion of these engines is meant to be possible (i know smartveg have done a few) but requires a second lift pump in the 2nd tank and some fooling of the ECU as it tends to throw its toys out of the pram if the fuel pressure is off.

300(& 200) tdi's are simpler - the lift pump is on the engine, injection pump is a bosch and can handle veg oil with no problem. The only problem is that as they are direct injection engines if the oil is not atomised correctly by the injectors (say if its cold) then it wil get past the piston rings and contaminate the sump oil which can lead to polymerisation.

oh and it looks like HM customs won't be after their 28p a litre soon either!

hope this helps!

Cheers wolfie.

so does this mean if I were to buy new stuff from say Makro that I wouldnt have to pay tax on it to be fuel? Also if I were to say get some oil from a pub for free and filter it myself I wouldnt need to pay duty on it?

Right. Off to the pub  This seems like an ace plan to solve my poor mpg problem :D

That's the idea - believe it was costing HMCE too much to process all the £5 cheques from all the people making a few litres of biodiesel/veg oil a month. The 2500 litre limit HAS NOT come in yet (some point in the summer) until then you need to carry on paying your 28p a litre. You'll still need to register with HMCE so you can prove where your fuel came from when the police pull you over.

Got to watch the makro veg oil - the big drums actually cost more per litre than sainsburys!

But I could install all the kit now and then as soon as the goverment give the go ahead I can sling veg oil in the big tank and diesel in the small one

Shame I cant buy nicely filtered oil off a nice person for say 5p a litre

It does seem to be the way forward though in motoring. Gets around the high insurance prices and road tax! I might be able to afford a few other luxuries like new parts for the disco then

I have a 300tdi.

As far as I know you can add filtered old vegoil or new veg oil direct into your tank as long as you dont put more than 30% oil in the diesel tank ( I am sure Ed will correct me here) If you put too much in it solidifies in the engine and makes the engine sieze up over night.

To run on 100% veg oil you need to put in a small tank for diesel (a 5gallon drum in the boot usualy) and a heat exchanger in the engine bay to warm the oil up. So you start the engine on diesel until the oil is warm then switch over to oil and drive until your heart is content and then at the end of the journey run the engine for 5 mins on diesel again to clean the system ready to start the next journey on diesel.

So what you are saying is my 300tdi "should" be ok with pure veg oil filtered. If I distill  my own biodeisel I can use it as a full tank without an extra normal diesel filled tank?

hmm yeah. Although VERY long it is an interesting read.

The firs thalf I got lost on but it all came clear later on.

The long and short of it is running on diesel /VO mix means coking up and could lead to the sump oil / VO mix combusting and running away by itself.

Running on VO only (heating engine with diesel though) is fine as there isnt a difference in combusting temperatures as you get with mixing Diesel and VO.

Have  I worked this out right?

Ditto. I have gone off mixing as well after reading that. I tend to either do very long trips with a trailer in tow or a short trip to work to re fuel or give the engine a run after being sat for a week or 2!

I've been mixing about 30% SVO into my diesel for around 4 years now, in my old 300Tdi 110, then in my current 300Tdi disco..

i've never had any problems like that, the only problem i had was the fuel injector leak-off hoses perished, which cost about £2 and took 5 mins to replace.
i'm running on it now, and will continue to do it.. you don't even need to pay tax on it after next weekend.

there is a lot of bulls**t and scaremongering on the web about SVO, mostly posted by people who have never tried it, or went to far and hashed it up...

You could always do a twin tank set up, pretty easy, and it gives you the opportunity to flush out the oil now and again.
