Pump tweak
piggysteve:
Piggysteve minor has aquired a disco 1 with an uprated intercooler and with a tweaked pump. Trouble is the old girl smokes a lot on acceleration.
Is the pump tweaked too much and if so how do we cure it ?
Cheers
Steve
Budgie:
What colour smoke is it?
Black: Too much fuel not getting burnt - turn injector pump settings down.
Gray mist: About right - don't touch a thing.
Blue: Burning oil - bad!
White: Could be duff injector, normally accompanied by a misfire.
White vapour on starting: Head gasket has gone/water in the exhaust.
The problem is, if it's black smoke, then you don't know what has been tweeked in the injector pump so you don't really know what to turn down and by how far.
Was the intercooler & tweeking done by the last owner or the company who produced/fitted the intercooler? If it was the company then I would advise letting them have a look at it.
If you're not sure what you're doing then you can make it a lot worse and even knacker the engine if you get the exhaust gases at too higher temperature.
If you want to play then you can use this site as a guide but take note of the warnings and make a note of everything you alter & by how much so you can put it back if doesn't work.

It's also a good idea to start with a clean intercooler and new air filter before you start on the injector pump.

Sorry forget to say the smoke is black. I think the pump was probably tweaked by the lads who owned the truck before.

Guardian.:
ID BE TURNIN THE SMOKE SCREW OUT AN EIGTH OF A TURN AND I RECKON THAT WILL SORT IT OR HELP REDUCE BLACK SMOKE.
MINE SMOKES A BIT TOO MUCH ALSO BUT GOES WELL AND CANNOT BE BOTHERED TO WIND OUT AGAIN.
ITS QUITE FINE ADJUSTMENT SO DO NOT START UNWINDIN!

Check the condition of the air filter as well. might not have been changed for ages
