Di and DiT engines and what to look for when buying
« on: May 01, 2007, 23:15:36 »
Mate of mine looking at a DiT model tomorrow for £3000, think he said it was 1999/2000 model but can't be sure as I was only half listening  , he's also looking at a Di model.
Now I know the difference is one has a turbo and the other doesn't but can you turbo a non turbo :?:

I know that to check the IRD you have to full lock and drive slowly and if it feels like its applying the brakes then its on its way out but that it
any thing else he needs to check, I did try and pursude him to go for a Disco but he thinks they leak lots, as if............

hey mate...can understand why he wants a freelander over a disco...they are better!

You got the driving in circles trick - although I believe that is for the VCU not IRD

Check the underside for off roading damage like any other 4x4, and also check the exhaust if it has a tow hook - it has been know for trailers to slip underneath and damage the bottom of the car

Check all the electrics work - and that it has HDC/TC

Make sure it has drive shafts to front and rear - people are known to take the rear one out of they are getting transmission trouble as it stops vibrations

Listen for glonks from the rear differentials - means the diff mountings have gone (easy to fix)

and I think that will cover the worst of it off the top of my head!

All freelander D engines have the turbo, the older lump is the Rover TD engine, L series, the new one is the TD4 BMW unit
My Land Rover Freelander TD4 creates less emisions than my house mates 1.3 petrol Fiesta and does more miles per gallon!

Oh well, in that case, me pointing out that the TD4 is a considerably better bet than the L-series diesel is a bit redundant.

I know and I told him. I think the words out of mouth were 'don't do anything til I come back to you tomorrow'

Inbetween that and the following day he'd bought it. He's the same everytime, you never know what he'll do next

I didn't even get to tell him the list of things to check so who knows what he has bought

Jimny, I'm selling my Disco for a Freebie so i'll be up for some freebie laning, how capable are they. I didn't do any laning in the Disco cause of one problem after another so i'm hoping for a quiet life with the freebie......
