dod51e:
Thanks for the advice so far guys.  The vacuum hose is in tact and connected.  Fuel pump and filter replaced very recently and supply seems OK as it will start and run from cold.  Will try testing the temp sender and try replacing the air mass meter.  Will keep you posted.
Thanks again.

Rainbird:
the rotor arm and dizzy cap are genuine ones are they?  The Rover V8 seems to be extremely fussy about these.  I made the mistake of going for cheaper pattern ones and ended up with it running fine when cold and a total pig when hot

Range Rover Blues:
And there are lot of dodgy ones about judging by the threads on here

Update No. 2

It is not the fuel pump or filter, got fuel,
Replaced the coil for good measure, not the spark,
Not the potentiometer,
Not the injectors
Not the extra air valve,

Had satisfactory readings from the temp sender.
Odd readings from the airmass meter.

Swapped the air mass meter and it still wouldn't go :(bigcry):
So I gave up and had some tea.
However at 7.00pm it started....and lasted only two minutes.
This time I called in the big guns....called the mechanic.
it appears that the temp sender can give correct readings with a test meter but that doesn't mean it will work!!!  Typical land rover part really
I will try fitting a new temp sender tomorrow and let you all know.  Thanks for all the help so far.

Range Rover Blues:
Sounds like mine when the coil went, so what about the Dizzy HT amp thingy?

You need a spark tester, Gunsons made them and a few places still stock them.
