my brother in law changed his oil pump for a brand new one as the guage was reading 10psi and the red light was flickering.
when he fitted it he filled it up with oil to the max and turned it over untill oil came through the turbo oil feed pipe but when he started it the oil light was still flickering and the pressure was non existant although it was getting up to the top of the rockers and to the turbo.

we checked to see if the oil dipstick was the right one and it was reason for this is that it only took just under 4 litres of oil to fill
so today we thought sod it and put another litre of oil in it and hey presto 25psi oil pressure on tick over but the oil level is above the danger mark so what ever is going on?

oh and its a 2.5td engine

Wouldn't worry about too much oil in a TD should burn off within the week :lol:

When my oil light was flickering I just cleaned the terminal and has been fine ever since

the dipstick tube has droped down in the hole thus giving a false reading

so your saying the tube its self has droped would it be best to buy a new one or is there a way of pulling it back up to where it should be?

hes just phoned me to say he has oil driping out of his exhaust so i am guessing that the turbo oil seals are now had it i have had enough of this car and its not even mine

I was told too much oil was as bad as not enough, cos it will blow the seals etc.

Mine is similar. Every oil change I have only managed to get about 5 litres out even if I lift the front/side up, and takes 5 litres again to max mark. I was also told that some of the sumps are only 5 litres. Not sure if anything I've been told is true but the sources are fairly reliable/knowledgable

I had oil light flickering on my Defender changed oil pressure switch first as it is only about Ã‚Â£3. Still had same problem ended up taking engine apart traced fault to number 3 and 4 bearings on the camshaft had moved forward. This lowers oil pressure. This is rare but can happen on 200 tdi. :whothedaddy:

there has been a recent thread on landroveraddict about this

mine ony seemed to take 4/5 litres on a oil change and turned out my dipstick tube had slipped down in the sump, when i moved it to the right height and put 7l of oil in its now hell of a lot quieter and runs 10x better

200tdi by the way

I have done. It says 7 litres but I have only ever got 5 litres out.
So how do I know if the dipstick has dropped down?

i was told

"my 200Tdi's dipstick tube top edge [dipstick removed] is 290mm from the top face of the large retianer nut."

so thats what i set mine too, takes nigh on 7l of oil to filler up.

Hmmm. Oddly enough. Mine measured less than 290mm.
I have also heard that some of the 200tdi's had smaller sumps that only took 5 litres.
Wasn't too bothered until you told me it should be 290mm now I'm concerned I've been running it too low on the oil.

Had another look today, and found the dipstick tube was loose, so my conclusion is that the dipstick tube has slipped down, think its been doing it slowly everytime I check the oil.
Now I need to know if that 290mm is correct or not.

I can see I'm going to end up draining and refilling here. Just so I know whats in there. Then I can set my dipstick accordingly.
The only trouble there is whether there is any truth in my second question.

I have just discovered that some of the early 200s didn't have oil coolers and hence didn't take as much oil to fill them, mine does have an oil cooler so that answers the second question.

my dip stick was all wibbly wobbly so i reckon yours might have slipped down too les

easy way to check is to lift it up out of sump and lay it against it out side at its current height, mine was at just the right height for the bottom of dipstick to be sat on the bottom of the sump :shock:

i'm fairly sure it shouldnt be that low :roll:

no i dont think its supposed to be sat on the bottom of the sump, if you pull out the dipstick tube you should see an indentation from where it was fitted in the right place at the factory

No such indentation noticed when I pulled it out, but I did measure dipstick against side of block and seems to almost reach the bottom of the sump, but the tube is less than 290mm :?

best drain the oil and chuck 6.8l back in, then set the dipstick to suit sounds like the best bet

looks like that would be one sure way to sort it out. Just not due and oil change yet so trying to avoid that.
