My charge light is on constantly...gets brighter with increasing engine revs , and at high revs (3500+) flashes.
I've checked the voltage at the battery and with the engine running, reads 13.5V and fluctuates if the throttle is blipped, so i guess it is charging correctly.

Any idea what the fault might be?

Yes, unbfortunately I think the alternator is bust.  There is a regulator/diode inside that ensures the field coil runs at the same voltage as the battery, it's called the exitation current.  If the lamp is on it means this circuit is not working, either the car is being charged via the ignition light or the diode is opne circuit and the exitation current is still coming through the battery.

As above or the regulator pack is nuked and possibly over charging/undercharging the battery. It *could* be brushes.

Either way you need to get it looked at or at least strip off the regulator pack and check the brushes.
