Wheel size explained

<< < (2/3) > >>

CanIBeFrank:
Thanks for your help Ron and Andy.

Range Rover Blues:

--- Quote from: "Disco-Ron" ---235 85's would be better on 7's, the 8mm offset means that the hub face, is 8mm nearer the outside rim than from the centre of the rim..... if that makes sense.... a wheel with the hub face directly in the centre has an offset of zero..... nearer the outer face is positive, nearer the inside is negative offset...

Hope that helps!!

eh :-s

The 8 is the width of the rim in inches, not the offset which is a measure of, well the offset of the tyre over the hub flange.

IF you are buying new wheels then there is an arguament for fitting wider rims, in that 235mm is way more than 7 inches and to get the best handling the rim should be as wide or wider than the tyre tread.

But on a 2 tonne truck, handling, really :?

Disco-Ron:
RRB, i know what i meant, but i can see where it could be read wrongly, the '7' i refer to was rim width, where i mention '8', i'm refering to offset, not rim width..... hth....

CanIBeFrank:
So,

235/85 R16 Machos on 8x16 modulars then? (sorry if I'm not picking this up to quickly)

redhand:
yep got it in one. As 235mm = 9 1/2". Th wheel should never be wider than the tire! If it was it wouldn't maintain an airtight seal. Also the rim of a tyre is the narrowest part of the tire so a 235 tire is probably 200mm wide at the rim.
