Could be the P gasket - the one between the block and the water pump. An uprated metal gasket was produced due to the problems experienced with this. Sounds like it's in the right area too.

seems to be the rear of the engine not the front...collects at th 'bulkhead' point - but no water inside and heater disconnected.

been told the same thing today

Leslie Henson:
If the 'P' gasket was the problem, the leak would be at the front of the engine - close to the dipstick.
