Core plugs

<< < (3/3)

DiscoCWK:
I can assure you there is a core plug at the rear of the engine!

A couple of weeks ago I noted on here that I thought my heater matrix had gone. My symptoms were that coolant was dropping from behind the soundproofing on the bulkhead on to the exhaust and gearbox. After doing some research about the task at hand I decided to bite the bullet and use a local mechanic (the same one who fixed my head-gasket!) he was sure he could do it without removing the dash - he was wrong!

He removed the dash and the heater matrix and found the heater full of anti-free so he replaced a very corroded heater matrix. He put it all back together and the leak still continued he then stripped the dash out again as the next candidate is the aluminium manifold that sandwiches the bulkhead and allows the coolant to pass into the heater. He eliminates that and discovers its the core plug at the rear of the engine that sits tight against the sound-proofing.

In the end to save removing the engine and running up a huge bill he cut a hole in the bulkhead - changed the core plug and welded a patch back into the bulkhead, refitted the dash (fixed the non-cancelling indicators whilst there) and it's now sorted.

I hope yours isn't the core plug BTW!

Regards

James
